I sighted it in between gun-deer hunting today. It's a CVA Wolf .50. These things are fun to shoot!

Jon, try buckhorn 209 powder. You can get about ten to twenty shots, before having to clean. Triple 7 is great, but is dirty as heck. You will have to clean the barrel about every 3 to 5 shots. Remember to clean the barrel after hunting.[;)] I forgot one season and had to use bore buster to clean it up. I was ready to toss the gun out, before a gun shop owner told me what to do. BP is extremely dirty. Enjoy your new gun and have fun. Also, try power belt bullets. 245 grain with 100 grains of BP. Oakie

I have a CVA inline bolt action muzzle loader. With 150G worth of Pyrodex Pellets and I can't remember the brand of slugs but they are saboted .45cal pistol bullets, that thing will smash Coke cans all day at 200 yards. I killed several PA whitetail with it and a MT antelope, awsome little gun.

I still have and wish to ressurect my old TC Renegade flintlock gun, that is my .54cal Howitzer [:D]

Monday here too Oakie. Good luck to you!

After cleaning at the end of the season, do I swab the barrel in the bore butter for storage?

Actually Sig, you will find bore butter to be a very poor long term storage protectant.

I highly recommend that after you clean and completely dry out the barrel's bore, that you swab it down with RIG grease.

That will keep the bore pristine for very long periods of time. When you are ready to shoot again, just swab with a patch soaked in alcohol which will melt away the RIG.

They are nice and pretty accurate too. Bought one for my son when he was 12, I think the time between shots helped teach him to be accurate on the first shot.

The easiest way to clean them seams to be in a pail of warm water with Dawn dish soap and a couple patches to move the soapy water up and down the barrel. Followed by a few dry patches and let to dry then bore butter. If you use hot water the barrel warms up and the last of the water dries pretty quickly.

Only downside is on a still day, it takes a some number of seconds before your previous field of view is visible again, so after you shoot, listen for the direction of the deer dropping, running!

PS - after you decide you like it, your user name can't accommodate a hyphenation with CVA50 [:)]

Congrats on the new smokepole. Let me throw my .02 cents with 2 suggestions.

First, buy a bottle of "Butches Blackpowder Boreshine". Midway USA and others sell it online. I cannot find it anywhere locally. By far, the best blackpowder cleaner I have used. It is the same stuff the military uses to clean aircraft artillery. It neutralizes the acids and salts from burning BP substitutes and since I started using it, I have not had any rust or pitting.

Second, I highly recommend installing a Grovtec hammer extension or more commonly known as a "hammer spur". This will help if you have gloves on and need to cock the hammer.

    Good luck, Don

Jon, when I am done at the end of the season, I thoroughly clean the barrel and then put it away in the safe like any other gun. I have never put anything in the barrel to store it from one season to the other. I have had the same BP rifle for 15 years and the barrel looks like new. Just make sure to clean it all the way. Take out the breech plug and soak it in a solvent and scrub the barrel. Let it dry and put it back together. Jon , this part is critical so take heed. Make sure that you put a anti seize lubricant on the breech plug before you reinstall. You can buy it at any gun store or walmart and such places. They make it for BP rifles. In a pinch, you can use crisco. Just make sure you do this or that plug will seize in there so tight, you will never get it out.[;)]Just snug it back in and do NOT tighten it hard. My first ML was a Remington 700ML. I didn't know about the anti seize lube and had to send the gun back to Remington. They couldn't get the plug out either and had to send me a whole new gun. Other then that, enjoy buddy.Oak

Another great tip from Oakie. I prefer the T/C "Gorilla Grease", but any good anti seize lube will work. Here is a link with description for the Gorilla Grease. Also made by T/C.

That is what I used for years. It is purple and works great also. You can use either Jon.

I've never owned a muzzle loader but I have shot frontier cartridge in SASS matches. I loaded 12 ga. shotgun shells, .38-40 and .45 Colt cartridges with American Pioneer Powder which is a black powder sub and it burns cleaner than black powder. No need to use lube as it makes it's own and it also makes more smoke than black powder.
