6.5 Grendel thoughts

What are your honest thoughts on an AR in 6.5 Grendel, with a 22" barrel? Any and all thoughts and input are appreciated.

Update: Made the swap today. I will have to get on assembling my other lower now. I will throw the 6.5 upper on my test lower and give it a whirl ASAP for now.

The 6.5 Grendel has been an incredible cartridge since it was designed by Bill Alexander, I have considered it to be the best possible cartridge for the standard AR-15, but it was always hampered by one major issue, that being Bill Alexander himself. But now that the Grendel has wide acceptance you can enjoy the benefits without having to deal with Alexander Arms, you can get you upper, dies and brass from outside sources, plus Lapua is now making the brass so you can have quality brass that will last for many firings.

my first thought is barrel length. if you're going to have a barrel that long, on an AR15 platform, you must be doing it for high capacity long range shooting, which means prairie dogs. anything else would be better served by a shorter barrel, or a different cartridge in a hunting rifle because that combination ain't it. imho

    +1

It was a PIA dealing with Alexander but now it is much more simple. I think if you want a 6.5 G go for it. I have never shot one but I have shot a 6.8 and it was a nice shooting rifle.

I think the 6.5 Grendel is the best long range cartridge for the standard AR platform. I have a billet upper receiver waiting to be built into a Grendel. Several projects to finish before starting that though. Its cool that the prices just keep coming down on Grendel parts.

I have read some good things about it the past couple days. Last weekend I was offered an upper for a "project" rifle I have sitting in the safe. The rifle won't work for the job I had originally intended it for, so I figured I might make the swap. I didn't know much about the 6.5 Grendel, until I started doing some research here.

I figure a 5.56, 6.5 Grendel, and .450 Bushmaster would complement each other nicely in the AR platform.

Just finished building mine with a DPMS slick side upper with a 18 inch Lilja 3 groove barrel. Impressive round.

Why bother? The 5.56 does everything I ask it to.

When I want more horsepower I pick up a bolt gun.

I have off tomorrow and the wife has to work....so I am going to try and get some shooting in, between the rain showers and scattered storms we're supposed to get.

I have some 123 grain SST Hornady factory ammo and 120 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip handloads to try.
