41 magnum

Any one here pack or shoot a 41 mag ?
Snagged a nice S&W model 58 while on a trip
this past week. Seller threw in the original box of ammo
he purchased when he bought the revolver...only fired 18
times. I shot it today. Recoil not that bad.
Made the deal while traveling in the RV.
The old dude parked next to me started talking guns and we made a trade. My S&W 13 for his S&W 58...each had box and papers and ammo.

Dang I wasn't suppose to trade it off. Just send it to me and I'll send you something back.

Love the .41 mag. Out theree somewhere is a model '94 in .41 mag. to match. Also it's worth porting. (get s&w to do it) then it'll be right.

I am a real big fan of the 41 magnum. It is a very mis undersood calibur. Flater shooting than the 44mag. More powerful by far than the 357 mag. Designed to be the law enforcement revolver of all times. The boarder partrol adopted it as there fire arm. The only calibur I like better is the 10mm. My 2 cents [8D] [8D]

I've been shooting .41 magnums since they first came out. Had to pay $50.00 over retail to get one , they were extremely hard to come by back then. I sold my .44 magnum and never looked back after buying the 41. Both are excellent but I preferred the flat shooting of the 41 over the 44. At present I am down to one Model 57 S&W but if I ever run across a Model 58 that has a decent price on it--it's going home with me.

As others have said the .41 is a great round and widely misunderstood, partly because it came about after the .44 mag. I think you scored.

First of all I hope you were both residents of the state you were in when making the trade otherwise you were violating federal law and that's a bad thing to discuss in a public forum.

The 58 has achieved something akin to cult status in recent years. Meant for police sales it never really caught on. Then a few years ago some shooters and collectors took notice and the prices on these guns (which I once described as looking like a Model 10 on steroids) went through the roof.

The .41 Magnum cartridge is often said to fall between the .357 and the .44 Magnum but it's really much closer to the .44 being only about 15% less in the energy department. There are some real fans of the .41 but there really isn't anything the .41 can do that the .44 can't do a bit better. There's a wider selection of factory ammo for the .44 and more bullet selection for reloading. If I could only have one I would choose the .44 without reservation as being the more versatile. But fortunately I am not restricted in the number of guns I can own so I have both calibers and like them all the guns that shoot them.

Hmmm... Now that I think about it, I have two .41s (a 57 and a 58) and only one .44 (a 29) so maybe I'm not tipped so far towards the bigger caliber as I first thought.

Anyway, the 58 is a lot of fun and you should enjoy it. If you don't reload you should consider getting started as the .41 is one of those calibers that really demands home-brewed ammo to save $$$$ and to increase usefulness.

BTW- The 58s came with special Magna stocks that are rounded at the bottom. The 58s and the 520s made in 1980 are the only N frames to come with the stocks. If your new 58 has the correct stocks don't trade them for a Pachmayers or some other silly thing as they bring a premium due to scarcity. Lots of guys with 58s wearing the wrong stocks are desperately seeking these.

And in steps a completely unneeded comment:

Why is it unneeded? Wouldn't you want to know if you were broadcasting an unitentialy committed federal offense? I'm just trying to help the guy out.

I would point out that if my comment was unneeded then what purpose does yours serve? Seems like nothing more than a cheap shot. Am I wrong?

I like the .41 mag., had a 57 with six in. barrel that really shot great. Man I miss that gun.

I recall a book that was available around 20 (?) years ago called
"Bridge City". The lead character carried a 58.

wasn't the murder weapon in Robert B. Parker's book "Pale Kings & Princes" an old .41?

I was at the local gun show last fall and this S&W 57 8 3/8" with presentation case grabbed me by the leg and I couldn't shake it off.
I didn't even know I wanted a .41 mag. Unfired, private sale, $450.00. The long barrel really stops any severe recoil.

I'm still not sure why I need a .41, I've never needed my little .357 yet, or my dinky .45acp.

I have a Super Blackhawk 41. Dropped a nice 9 pointer with it last winter. Neat round. Quite a punch not much recoil.

Sorry Chief Shaway but Ruger only made the 41mag in the Blackhawk, never in the Super Blackhawk.

    I've been in love with the 41mag since the mid 70's. Currently I have a S&W 57 6", a S&W 657 6", a Marlin 1894, a Ruger Redhawk 5.5", and about 25 old model Ruger Blackhawks in 41mag which I collect. A great caliber.

I've got a Model 57. I dont shoot it much cause like the .44mag it's kind of expensive. I personally feel the .44 mag is better suited to hunting big animals etc. rather than people. At long distances I think the ballistic curve of the .41 is flatter than the .44mag. For self defense the .41 mag. is probably the most powerful round you could honestly say you need.

Actually, they did make a Super Blackhawk Hunter in 41 mag. Sent you an email of one.
