Not Ancestry, but 23 and me. Disproved the family legend that we were descended from a Cherokee princess. They said my fathers haplotype came from Northern Europe, No surprise, that is where Britian and Germany are after all. My mothers haplotype came from the Middle East somewhere, which was a surprise. This would have been at least 5 generations back. I may go to Ancestry to see if they can more precisely narrow down where in the Middle East. It is not snake oil.

That is a decision you will have to make.

One thing about it is, there ain't nothing you can do about it.

Not to change the subject, but what is your opinion of the so called Toba Catastrophe which proposes that there was a species threatening population bottleneck 70,000 years ago that left all of us are descending from fewer than 10,000 individuals? That could mean as few as 3,000 breeding pairs and might explain why there is so little diversity among humans.

I am lucky. Both sides of my family kept good records in the old bibles they had. I know all my ancestors all the way back to the early 1700's before they even came to the GA colony with Oglethorpe in the 1730's.

I took my Dad around when he turned 80 to see a lot of the cemetery's where they are buried in GA, AL, MS, LA, TN and OK. We spent 2 weeks doing it, some of the cemetery's were way out in the woods on peoples property. My Dad knew about where most of them were from talking to other Family members at reunions. It was a fun time.

I did it and was surprised to find 23% came from the Iberian Peninsula with the remainder Northern European and English.

Yes, We did the analysis with Ancestry.com. Was revealing, but not too much, as My side we had researched back into the 1500's (where most ancestry research grinds to a halt, as most families further back did not have Surnames). Instead, they used location, thus: Leonardo "From Vinci", and Joan "From Arc" etc).

Only those related to Royalty, or Priesthood can go back farther.

Wife can go back to 1100s on one branch.

The Chromosomal assay confirmed our research somewhat.

There were surprises about lesser percentages, though.

Was Fun, and a great addition to the Family Stories for our Descendants.

No need to. Pop's bunch came from the Jamison's that make Irish Whiskey, Mom's folks came through Jerome Bonaparte.
That's as far back as I care to go.

It is greatly beneficial should you be into genealogy and want to confirm that your DNA matches your family surname or not. Should there be such a match, you'll be able to identify some of your relatives. Some folks find that their DNA does not match their surname.

People who are considering having their DNA tested for such purposes who might also know a cousin or two with the same last name that have been tested, might want to familiarize themselves with the current online surname charts for additional information.
    What's next?

My Dad did, and my Mom refused to so he conned me into doing it so we can compare his results to mine. My real grandmother (never met her) was an off the boat Italian, I've heard sicilian. We will see when the results come in...

I had mine checked at Ancestry. The only thing odd was the 1% Jewish. That would have been enough to get me smoked in one of Hitler's ovens.[:0] It also means I can tell Jewish jokes now and be PC doing it. [:D]

    Europe 100%
    Great Britain 60%
    Europe West 16%
    Ireland 7%
    Scandinavia 6%
    Europe East 6%
    Italy/Greece 2%
    European Jewish 1%
    Liberian Peninsula 1%
    Finland/Northwest Russia < 1% (< less than)

I did it in Feb. Got the results.

Good news is that I am not related to Terrorist Types.

The nations fit with what we know going back to the 1500's in both Germany and England. Some overlap DNS north of North Rhine Westphalia and Eastern France near Cologne.

I expected to find DNA related folks in Wisconsin where my people were 140 to 160 years ago.. But they showed their New England roots which were earlier....mid 1600's.

My father was very involved with the family genealogy and found we were tied to the first king of Norway. He was very proud of that until someone informed him that Harold had many wives and it is actually harder to prove that you are not related to him.[:0][;)]

My family tree was struck by lightning back in the 12th century!

Nothing left to find except what is buried in the wood pile![:0]

My late mother's late father (my grandfather) is a true mystery man.
Even when he was living, no one knew how old he actually was.

Seems the court house in Wisconsin where all of his birth records were, burned down around the turn of the 20th century.

He never shared what he actually knew about himself with anyone including his own wife (my grandmother).

Not only his age is in question but his ancestral makeup.

He had a lot of physical features that coincided with native Americans.

Sam said it best. I have absolutely no interest in knowing. My father claimed Scots-Irish ancestry. My mother, English & French.

I could not give a less of a poop about any of it any more.

    I spent $100 on 23andme.com
Mostly it went along with family lore that I am a Celt. That is, 65 percent Irish, Scottish, and Welsh.
Also lots of German, and Danish. Germanic warriors and Vikings, that's good.

What I liked the most is that I am 3 percent Neanderthal!
I am a living, breathing Cave Man.

Yes, British. When Cromwell's army invaded Ireland, you don't suppose all those British soldiers spent the night all alone every night, do you?

How big a "jar" of spit does it take ?.....jars come in many sizes, I'm thinking even a small one would take a lot of spit [:D]

Mark, I am not really well versed on the Toba theory, but it does tend to line up with mitochondrial Eve. I know there was another eruption that caused a "nuclear winter" in the 900s that was actually somewhat well documented, and it was indeed a dark time. OK sorry for the pun, but the results were dire if not catastrophic. Could be. What is your take?

Sure, but since all clinical laboratories are government certified, they have been collecting your blood samples for nearly four decades, anyhow.

You don't think they use all that blood sample they draw for testing, now, do you ?
