America's latest "mini-carrier"

The Navy's newest "landing ship", the America-class, was called a "mini-aircraft carrier" by Lynn Pace, wife of General Peter Pace (ret.).

Well, this "mini-aircraft carrier" is larger than the Charles De Gaulle, France's flagship and largest aircraft carrier.

The America-class will carry a crew of roughly 700 and over 1600 marines. That, by the way, is a compliment greater than 10% of the entire Israeli navy.

Each LHA of the America class is capable of carrying 20 fixed wing aircraft (planned to be F-35Bs) or a mixture of tilt rotor, rotor, and fixed wing aircraft to support the compliment of marines on board... which means each of the America-class will have more aircraft onboard than the entire Philippine Air Force has fighter jets.

And the USS America will not be alone. Four more of these vessels are planned, which means that if every other supercarrier in American service were somehow disabled, destroyed, or mysteriously disappeared, we would still have more carriers than China, India, Russia, the UK, and France combined.

Pretty cool![8D]
