Why is it so hard?

David took our oldest Lab Gus (only 4) to be put to sleep this morning. There is no way I could go. He has the worst allergies and nothing has helped. He is at the point where he chews himself till he bleeds all over, and it is selfish of us to think he is happy. I tried several times to contact his breeder and again yesterday when I happend across a thread with 8 pages of warnings and at the end found out he is now in jail. The thread was started a bit over 2 yrs after we got Gus. I was stomping bunny mad and would love to have 10 min alone with him with no consequences. Anyway... it's just a bad bad day when you have to put a trusted friend down, and even worse at such a young age. [:(][:(]

I am very sorry for your loss. We have a Cocker Spaniel that is constantly affected by allergies and I know what you have been dealing with (or can imagine what it would be like if this were worse....which has to be like torture.) I think bad breeders are a special evil that deserve the punishment they have coming in the after-life.

It just takes a lot of time to get over. Save any pictures you have.
They say a man ( or woman) only has 1 or two great dogs in their lifetime. I've got my two right now. I'll be inconsolable when they go.

We tried prednisone shots.. food.. vitamins.. everything..

The vet said she had never seen a dog allergic to as many things as Gus was. He could only eat rice, sweet potatos, deer, fish pork and rabbit. He was even allergic to garlic, oregano.. every tree around... all marsh grass.. It was insane. We have gone thru 2 years of treatment from allergy shots to steroids and nothing helped much. He did scratch and chew less, but still to the point of bleeding. We wipe down walls and wash bedding daily. have the furniture covered from knees down with stuff that wont get ruined with blood. It just got to the point that I dould not say that he was still happy. Even though he was allergic to it.. he got a big New York Strip and 3 pig ears for breakfast.

It never gets easy if you remain a human being. In fact, it gets harder the older a human being gets.

Very sorry that your friend is gone. Breeders might more correctly be called interbreeders. Puppy mills should be abolished to keep down incidents of what you experienced.

Truly a sad situation, both today and the past two years. Rest assured gagirl, you've done what's best for Gus.

My heart goes out to you folks.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Buried our 12 year old Malamute three months ago. I still sometimes automatically look for her when I drive up from work. I'll miss her the rest of my life.
