Had one many years ago. Ballistics will fall in the 1500FPS from the muzzle and around guessimating 750/800 ft pounds energy at the muzzle. Carbines 18" reach 1900 fps and 975 at the muzzle.

There used to be jacketed soft points available. (Speer?)
Don't recall any hollow points, but with the soft nose that's an easy fix. Been years since I had mine. I recall SEVERE muzzle blast. Went back to my .44 and .357's.

It is severe.. shoot it at night. About like my 7.62x39 Encore with a 10" barrel. Flame city.

Much friendlier round in the carbine. I used to dismiss it as being too inaccurate to kill whatever was big enough for it to hit. Have since developed some nicely accurate loads in my old Win.
Still wouldn't use it for deer, even though where I live you can use a .22 magnum. Now that's just downright wrong!

I went with my 15" barrel and brake.( that is actually an underwood turkey choke 12 gauge, brazed on after it went over the barrel )[:D][:D] This thing is cheap to shoot.

I had one when I was a kid. It was fun to shoot and fairly accurate with handloads. I shot a pile of military ball out of it and then when ball ammo got spendy I reloaded for it.

Speer used to have what they called a half jacket bullet that was fantastic for the 30 carbine round.

I shot at many a Ground hog with mine. When it connected it did the job.

Inland, Winchester, Saginaw, Rockola, etc. made what were basically mini 14s for this round.

I don't think you are going to find any hollowpoints for it, 900 ft-lbs would tear that apart.

Everything mentioned above is true. Loud with a large muzzle flash.

Grips could be a little larger for a better hand hold, little finger hangs off the bottom.

I picked one up back in 1978 for $75.00.

The 30 cal Blackhawk is my favorite revolver.

It gets a lot of attention at the range especially when I'm sitting at the 100 yard range.

It is scoped out with a Leupold and Weaver mounts. ( Can't seem to get the pics to post, been awhile since I did it)

Not the greatest groups at 100 yards but they are all in the black.

I spent some time looking for load data specific to the 30 Blackhawk and finally found a page in the Sierra Edition V just for this revolver.

    Sierra Edition V, page 726
    Ruger Blackhawk Pistol 30 Cal
    110 gr. RN
    IMR 4227 14.9 grains
    Velocity 1400 fps
Suggested trim length 1.285" but your chamber could be a little different.
    C.O.A.L. 1.690"

The same load will work in the M1 Carbine rifle and give a velocity of 1800 fps.

Again my favorite revolver, and I'd like to add another one to the family.

    Finally remembered how to:

Speer still makes the half-jacket bullet.
    It's called the Plinker.

I load them in my 30/30 and 30/06 for my youngest boy to shoot.
I use Trail Boss and Unique powders.

I think Sierra still makes a 90 grain HP. I liked mine, about half the cases had sticky extraction. One chamber had to be tapped out. I mounted a scope on mine, very nice accuracy out to 75 yds.

If the flash'n'blast from a revolver freaks you out, or you think that military ball is as good as handloads in a wheelgun; don't buy the Blackhawk.
I loaded the 85gr.plinker for almost 2200fps while working up silhouette loads in 30 Carbine, tried the 123gr. 7.62X39 bullet from fmj to fnsp (cast), got excellent results with the 125gr hptnt on the rams at +/- 210yds. That bullet only dropped 4" with my 125yd zero out of the 7 3/4"barrel.
Hogue grips, Hunter holster, IWI night sights & a spare cylinder got me into the gun for $500 awhile ago.

BTW- all you that yearn for an M1 Carbine that you won't feel guilty shooting the heck out of, should look at Kahr Arms; very nice wood, late features, flat bolt, I-hole stock. Comes with a 15rd may & sling/oiled. Haven't been able to fix any bayonet yet, maybe all the bayonets were shortened after the war...
Just heard that Inland (the only maker of "paratrooper" models), a division of General Motors(?) is currently manufacturing virtually identical-to-milspec carbines in volume. Somewhere North of $1350 or so. The Kahr is around $800ish.

Grafs has 110 RN FMJ for $9.50 per 100 ct. I use them out of a Marlin 62 and a Contender carbine, they shoot well.

Local gun shop near Dallas usually have several boxes on the shelf.
    I bought 3 last month.
Midway used to stock them too.

I have owned three over the years. Loud. Military ammo clocked 1,100 FPS (correction...1400) which was a little disappointing. Not much recoil. Fun to shoot.

I have one of the early Blackhawk .30 cals, 3 clicks and you can turn the cylinder. Good shooter and not bad recoil at all. I shoot pretty much only military ball.

Also have an AMT Automag in .30 carbine. Its also fun to shoot and loud.

I've been looking a long time for a neglected one I can pick up cheap to convert to 7.62x25
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

I frequent an indoor range sometimes during the winter, and had the range master come over to see what was making all the noise. It was the AMT III.[:)]
