getting "road-kill" deer from the Police

edited July 2005 in General Discussion
I was talking with a local police officer the other day at the range. We got to talking about a lot of things. And he mentioned that all I need to do was leave my name over at the Police Station to be put on the list to call when they have road-killed deer.[:D] I sure hate to see good venison go to waste!

Does anyone else do that? [?] [?]

Seems like it would not be that bad of an idea. I do butcher my own deer, and I could tell if the meat was no longer any good. What do y'al think? [?]

Good idea or bad idea? [?]

Here in Mississippi they gave all the meat to the local shelters.

Yes, but only when the local leo doesn't have time to take it in himself, or call a relative to come pick it up and hold if for him to finish his shift. North Alabama.

Also in Georgia there is a program to provide the meat to shelters. Don't know if this means we can't have it if we ask for it though.

In Georgia, there's usually enough guys on the LEO shift that take it without callin anyone else!

Had a couple of friends that ate nothing but "road kill" deer meat for a few years, because the local PD would call them.

They do that here too, however consider they will call you no matter what hour it is. I have heard of several late night early morning calls. Ok,if you don't have sleeping kids.

If the person who had the vehicle demolished by the collision doesn't take it, the Conservation officers haul it to the state prison. Helps keep taxes down.

I just wanted to point out that not only deer are killed on the road. I wonder how many tons of delicious rabbit, *, possumm and ground-hog meat go to waste each year. I say put it all in the stew and serve it to the guys at the prison.

I'm up in Moncton, NB right now, so I decided to give them my name after I get back from this trip.

Up here I understand that they take roadkill to the zoo. Not a bad idea, especially, since it is illegal to pick up road killed anything.[xx(]

    Roadkill, roadkill, pickin' up roadkill
Animals a walkin 'cross the road and then stand still
Too dumb, or maybe just a little slow, gettin' to the other side.
    Roadkill, roadkill, pickin' up roadkill
Nothin' better than an armadillo on the half shell
Scrape em up, throw em on the griddle and serve em up country fried!

With that said, I don't think Johnny Law will call anybody to pick them up around here. We normally call them in to the sheriff and take them home if we want it.
