With the Old Breed

Tonight on The War, they made extensive use of the writing of E.B. Sledge from Mobile. He authored "With the Old Breed" and as you may have heard from the show, he wrote very graphic accounts. I remember one passage of having to dig a foxhole through the maggot infested chest of a Japanese soldier. He had to * awhile before he was given permission to dig somewhere else.

Another passage spoke of a Marine that went out of his head at night and was giving away their position. He had to be silenced and was.

Mr. Sledge died a few years ago, but his son still lives locally and granted an interview with the Mobile Register, the daily newspaper. If you want to read an insightful account of the Pacific War, this is it.

I'm really learning quite a bit from this show. The fact one of the towns is Mobile is great! It's fun trying to figure out where the old photos were taken.[8D]
