.17 Bolt action suggestions for under $300-400

Really thinking about getting a .17 probably in hmr possibly hm2 would like something to target shoot with so probably lean toward hm2, I am thinking about selling my tikka t3 in .308 because I will not hunt with that expensive of a set up, and I dont really get out to shoot it enough otherwise.

I would like something I can kill some rodents with the .308 I am sure would kill them however I have a feeling I wouldent be able to eat what was left :P

Anyhow any suggestions at all? I am not set on the hmr/hm2 but want something to kill squarels and other small game with, in a bolt action package.

    I bought a Marlin 917VR in 17HMR, I love it.

Here's what it groups @ 100yds(5rds)....I mislabeled the picture, says VS.
    guns.jpg

    Marlin.jpg

Pretty good for an out of the box $189 gun. Topped with a 3-12x50 scope. Took 12 rounds to sight it in.

The ammo is a little more expensive, but the prices are coming down. It is an absolute joy to shoot.

I also have a 93 Savage...stainless. Won't shoot as good as the one above...but not far from it. Absolutely amazing little rifle. Mine cost 220 bucks...and get a better scope then you think you need...because the rifle deserves it.

The action on a Marlin is just to rough, its not fluid. The Savage with the thumb-hole stock is a pretty nice setup. If you are willing to spend a few dollars for a lot more gun, go for the Ruger. Academy sporting goods claims to sell a blued/laminated 77/17 for $450 but I have never seen it.

I agree with the statement about the Marlin action. It is pretty rough. However, a quick polishing and waxing and the action is much smoother, it has also improved after putting a hundred round through it or so. The M77/17 was rated over the Marlin and Savage, but all three were shooting about the same size groups. Marlin's magazine was supposed to be the major issue. The writer said the magazine fits loosely in the gun and the rounds don't chamber every time. I haven't seen the problem yet. The review was written a couple years ago, I would assume they fixed the problem later on.

Of course the Ruger is a much nicer gun, since it's built on the tried and true M77 frame and action. For around $200 you can't beat the Marlin or Savage.

I was looking at that myself, both the savage and marlin have the cheepest/crappiest magazine design if they had a more standard magazine system I would be more apt to buy one, but I don't like how chinsey they feel.

Duno they had a ruger there stainless sythetic hmr for 300 and I do like the action however I didnt like the stock at all and at 100 above the marlin/savage I think they could throw on a wood stock.

They had one ss savage with a missing rear sight and the pooptiest bolt I have ever seen, and 2 others that were blued, I agree the action doesnt feel all that great feels better than the marlin however and for 240 comes with a 3-9 scope and rings but still I duno didnt make me buy right off.

I would like to look at the cz's but sofar no one has any around here. They can get them but no one has them... oh ya the best deal I saw was a marlin in hm2 for 160 something, but I didnt like the look of the hm2 and find the longer hmr to make a more feesable bolt gun because of the longer cocking cycle and just because its a better round overall.

Also gander were selling both for 10 bucks a box.... I will look elsewhere for ammo...

Not sure what a CZ 453(?) costs but i think they have the single set trigger and you can get them in .17 HMR. I would lean towards that cartridge myself. I have a friend with both and never shoots the HM2. He says its accurate and shoots good. I would check on a Savage with an Accutrigger if thats in the price range. The Marlin my little brother has is a good gun also.

For $400, why not step up to the 17 Remington...IF you reload.

Why? Shots out to 450 yards are no problem.

    NO recoil.

Cheaper to shoot 17 Rem per 1000 rounds (including 100 brass!).

    per 1 per 100 per 1000
    Brass 26 0.26 26 26
    Powder 16 0.05 5 16.65
    Bullet 14 0.14 14 140
    0.45 45.28 $182.65 per 1000 rounds

    17 HMR $11 per 50 22 $220 per 1000 rounds

Actualy the most expensive I saw on sportsmansguide for 17hmr per thousand was 180.00 cheepest being 160.00 you get a discount when you buy 500+ rounds.

I did think about it, but I dont really want to reload for this gun and I wont be needing to shoot that far at least in the begining if my situation changes later on I can get something bigger, but right now I dont need that kind of range.

It may have been used, I duno I didn't ask it was marked on the tag didnt like the sights. I wanted to look at the nef in .17hmr but they only had one in .17hm2 for 130 used a new one is 180.00 it was ok but I still would like a bolt action. Gues im going to have to pick it up the closest thing I have seen in price is 440, however that one does have a wood stock... duno it is the best option I have seen and it is in my price range while on the higher end of it. This is why Im not sure. The stock is a pos and I want woodruger_77_17-RMP.jpg

I have a Marlin 917M2, heavy barrelled rifle and the action is very smooth. The Ruger and Savage rifles are not even close; and I have had all three brands. One thing I will say is that all brands shoot well.

Don't forget shipping. $11.49 is the actual going rate around here. I did not search the for cheapest that I could find...just what I could have in hand in fifteen minutes.

If I bought that much I would get free shipping, almost always have a coupon laying around for free shipping if order is over 50 bucks.

Cabelas is having a sale on 17HMR ammo. 500rds for 99.99, plus a free dry box, I imagine you can get free shipping on it as well. I'm sure 500rds will last you for quite some time.

Well I got a heck of a deal, a savage with accutriger synthetic stock heavy barrel blued w 10 round mag 159.99 model 93R17 17hmr and the mag being a 10 round is actualy usable. They are having a sale on them today and tommorow only, as well as a bunch of other things on sale. At Dunham sports.

out the door with 50 rounds of ammo it was 205 after tax. Probably 100 bucks cheeper than gander mountain a few blocks away.
