How far? One would commonly "drive" a water service.
Dig a hole by the curb stop, and drive a 1" steel pipe out to the hole.
Pull the pipe back, and fish the copper in through the driven hole.
Further than 20'-30'? Put a hole in the middle of the yard.
You can always drive with an assembly of 2' nipples with couplings.
I once had to pay a master plumber $50 an hour to dig a trench.
$350 later, the digging man/machine and me had a nice water service in,
avoided the backhoe, and saved the trees.
Call before you dig... Have the city come out and use their detector to tell you where the lines are. The utility company will also mark all gas, phone. Just install the new ones next to the old.
