I'm going blind:: UPDATE Update II: III

edited August 2015 in General Discussion
At least in my left eye. When I went to bed last night, eyesight was normal. When I got up this AM, left eye was real cloudy. Figured I just needed to wash the sleep out of my eyes.

After washing face, there is a large black circle blocking vision in the left eye. I think it is macular degeneration. Will try to see an eye doctor Monday.

This is real scary stuff for me since I live alone. I can cope with only one eye bad but both will be very bad news.

Any of you have this condition and is there any treatment for it?? Tom

Update: You guys talked me into going to the urgent care clinic. After a few tests, they sent me to the emergency room. The on call eye doctor was the same one who removed my cataract. I have busted blood vessel behind the retna. Will have to get looked at by specialist and that will be Friday.

Thank you all for your concern and I am glad I took good advice and went to hospital. OH Yes, doctor told me go get off the asprin!! I usually take 2-6 a day for pain. I will have to find another pain pill now. Tom

Update ll: Saw the specialist today and MAYBE sight can be improved. I see him in 3 weeks at Memphis office and he will poke around in the eye to flush/scrape the blood clot off the retina. Supposed to be an hour or so procedure. I have high hopes that all will go well and sight can be improved. Thanks to all who thought of me!! Tom

Update: lll Dr did his thing Friday and returned Sat for check. No improvement, in fact, a little worse. When I shake my head, it seems like Jello in my eye. Vision actually sloshes around. Very strange. go back Friday for another checkup. Really would like to get some good news. Bright side, I can still drive with my good eye!! However, don't come at me from my left side. Tom

My eyes are gradually getting bad as well.Nothing like the macular degen.U speak of.I can still shoot well but need my readers to do so.
I pray that Mon. will bring good news and they can prevent farther degeneration.
I know smoking weed is good for Glaucoma but, have no idea about macular degen.
Weed works on Glaucoma because it increases blood flow to the eye.Might help your condition as well...
Something to ask the Doc about...

I have had troubles with me eyes too. I went to a optometrist and they sent me to a ophthalmologist. Turns out I had a fever blister on my eye brought about from sun exposure. They gave me a steroid and it improved.

Don't wait go to the doc I waited and it got worse causing scarring.

I guess I'm going to have to get a judge to help with my aim...

after searching the internet, there may or may not be treatment for this problem. I have my fingers crossed that there may be help for my condition.

This problem does run in my family. My uncle had MD and it was treated but nothing ever helped him. I may be the lucky one.

Anyway, If I can get to see a doctor Monday, I will make a report on the prognosis. Tom

I don't think macular degeneration happens that fast. And I have not seen what you describe. I have spent a lot of time n eye clinics.
You may have a retinal detachment. Even with that it's not really something you see from outward appearance. You may have a burst blood vessel.
Do not think it takes trauma to cause detachment.
I have had detachment in both eyes without any kind of trauma.
From what you describe, go to the hospital immediately. Don't wait.
If you have an eye clinic near GO NOW.
Both of mine when diagnosed I was in surgery early the next morning.
They do not wait on these things.

Both my mother and older brother suffer from "wet macular degeneration".
In both cases, it came on very gradually, as in years.
My brother's is still in what is considered early stages.
Nothing like what you describe as an overnight occurrence.
My mother's eyesight is horrible (no depth perception and mostly limited to peripheral vision) and she has been getting some kind of injections in her eyes for several years.
They are supposed to be prolonging the decline of her vision, but who knows.
I hope and trust you'll find out on Monday that it's something else.
Prayers for a simple, easily treated diagnosis.
    Arrivederci gigi

Keep your spirits up and do not expect the worst as that is the very rarest outcome.

One of my brothers had cataracts and retinal detachment. The cataracts are easy to fix, the natural lens becomes cloudy and they replace it with a man-made lens. Extremely common eye surgery in the USA, so successful it is a routine out-patient procedure.

Then they used a laser to spot weld the retina to the back of the eye. Also out-patient. He's been just fine for vision over five years now.

    Don't wait until Monday.

A large black circle may very well be a retinal detachment and that requires immediate attention.

    Sooner the better.

If it is better now, then that wasn't the problem.

If unchanged or worse, a trip to a good ED is in order.

    Go NOW!

    Hi,
    Sounds like a detached retina.

Dad had something very similar to this while on a trip. It came on suddenly and he could not see out of the eye as day progressed. He went to an eye doctor close to the hotel that they were staying.
He came back home to do the surgery. It was reattached and he saw fine again.

You may want to make some calls to Doctor's today to see what they want you to do. I am thinking an emergency room should be able to tell if it is a detached retina.
I hope things work out for you.

Get to the ER. Any thing with eye needs immediate helps...

Call ahead to see which local ER's have eye equipment for looking in.

It could be a detached retina often caused by strains...

Good Luck and God be with you!

My other half had something similar happen to her eye; was a torn Retina that surgery repaired.

I would not wait until Monday; get to an ER & have it diagnosed NOW!

Her repair took a while to heal, but it did.

I have had it happen to me over night too and in one eye only.A quick visit to my local "urgent care" place found out I had "pink eye"...It never got in my other eye. They gave me a scrip for some thick eye drops.I think it was some sort of steroid, not really sure.
It cleared up in 48 hrs...

I'm glad you didn't wait to get the process started. Not knowing can make you nuts. It sounds like it is treatable and manageable. I'm sorry you have to put up with the extra pain while you're looking for an aspirin substitute.

    Best of luck to you.

That is a lot of aspirin to be taking everyday. Doctors have told me the long term use of too much aspirin promotes bleeding. So that's the reason you were advised to stop using it. You want the blood vessel to clot and heal if possible.

Hope the doctor gave you suggestions on which pain pills to use in place of aspirin. Such as either acetaminophen or ibuprofen, but not both together.

You are taking 6 aspirin a day, that could have caused that artery to bleed.

I am SOOOOO glad you went.....I have thought about you since earlier when I read this post. I take TylenolPM pretty regularly. I worry about that sort of thing leading to problems. People do not realize that these things build up in your system and can cause problems.

I hope your eyesight comes back to 100% quickly! Keep us posted!

Take Tylenol or generic containing tylenol drug Acetaminophen ONLY, some products have asprin. Acetaminophen WILL NOT THIN YOUR BLOOD.

Think a person can take 6 tylenol per day but limit my dose to a max of 2. Can't take asprin.

Sudden vision problem with darkness in the eye and my first guess is bleeding in the eye. Could be really serious...or not so much. But always seek medical attention right away.

Yep, my doctor said to take Tylenol. I personally did not know nor care about a difference. I just went with the price. Asprin is just so cheep!!

I will be taking Tylenol or some other cure tomorrow. Advil runs ads continually on TV. Do any of you users have a preference to pain pills? Will certainly try them out. Thanks again, Tom

I believe all that stuff is acetaminophen or salicylic acid. Both will kill you as dead as a bullet to the brain.Your liver is a tough SOB and can heal it's self in a hurry but,That crap will eat it up faster than it can heal.
Go see a Pain management doctor and insist on a real pain reliever.NOTHING that has either of the chemicals stated above.
See a reputable pain management Dr. and get on a pure opiate. It could save your life.
As long as U follow dr's orders and take as directed,U will never have a problem.Screw up and start taking them for fun, you'll be in a world of s**t!!
U only get 1 liver(unless you are David Crosby)U have to take good care if it...

I asked my Doc and he suggested Tylenol and stay away from Advil as it is a blood thinner as well. Again, check with your Doc!! And glad to hear it is nothing "super" critical, just critical.quote:Originally posted by tccox

It may take time for it to get better. Don't lose hope.

If that Dr. cannot help you, you may not have found the right Dr.
It took three different Drs before we found the right one to help Dad.

    Hope all goes well.
