The Joys of farm life......PIC

It was a about 15 degrees outside this a.m. I was looking out the window hoping to see some deer or yotes. Over in the corner of my pasture is a heifer eyeing a patch of weeds on the other side of the fence. She had calved sometime over the weekend and I had not seen the calf yet. The weeds surround my "Lagoon" which is fenced in.
I get a bad feeling about the whole thing and headed down to take a look. Yote tracks all around the area so I figure I am going to find a mess or a calf in the lagoon.
To my surprise there was the little bugger hunkered down in the weeds. I got right up on him and hoped to shoo him towards mama. He stood up and tried to run the wrong way so I grabbed him turned him around and wacked him on the butt and he headed towards Mama.
Now mama was quite a ways off until the calf bellowed when I grabbed him. She came running full bore in my direction. Thank God he went the right way or I might have had a problem.
These are owned by a guy who rents my pasture land and he works during the day. So a little exercise, a little adrenaline rush to start the day.....[:)]

Interesting tagging schema, but I guess it works. Looks like a 1st year heifer / cow. Gotta' watch them girls, they can be dumber than a bag of hammers sometimes. Other times they can be smart as a whip, just depends. Calf looks healthy, maybe 2-3 days old. Keep your eye on him, he needs to be bangin' his head into momma's udder on a regular basis. In fact, that should be about the only thing on his mind!
Are there any other cows in the pasture? Reason for asking is, she will walk off. With several cows, one will always stay with the calf(s) as a baby sitter. If she's alone, she'll walk off and leave that calf and then he'll be very vulnerable to predators.
Sounds like she's protective which is a good thing, provided he's nursing.
Yes there are other cows in the pasture. All due to calf anytime I have been told. I don't understand the whole tag thing either but it seems to work for the owner and his Dad that has a large herd across the road.....The owner of the calf stopped by just a little while ago and I told him about the calf...
Weather is suppose to be in the 40s tomorrow and 60 by next week.
I don't see how a new born calf can make it in weather hovering around the zero mark?
As long as the calf is dry, they can handle some pretty extreme temperatures.....below zero.
POST of the month[;)][;)][;)] I absolutely love this picture. Your becoming quite the photographer.[^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^]
Couldn't agree more. Excellent photo!
Looks like some sort of postcard or motivational poster.
Hmmm, how could we caption this?

Oh, I'm sure he knew about the calf...someone tagged it.
I told him the calf was out and how the mother reacted to it when it came back....we talked about this being the first calf for her and that she is figuring out the mama business....

Nice!
Our cows freshen in the snow all the time. They should start in a few weeks, and there will still be snow by then I am sure.
Rarely do we lose one, and we have never lost one to predators, though the sheep, chickens, and other critters get scarfed up all the time.
The cold weather isn't a problem, but wet weather is. They will get pneumonia faster if they get rained on in cold weather, and don't dry off.

This is what the little ones look like.
