Is Google/Chrome listening
miles
Member Posts: 2,548 ✭✭✭✭✭
If you google the subject, there are numerous links that say YES.
I'm willing to bet that some will puff out their chests, line up and proclaim that they don't say anything that they care being overheard because they have nothing to hide and blah, blah, blah Ad nauseam.
I've a couple of issues with that line of thinking.
First, we all say things in private that we would be uncomfortable saying in public.
Things concerning health issues, finances, conversations about friends or family and other private issues best kept private.
Another point to ponder is will the "New and improved Windows 10" be doing the same crap. It's my understanding that the new version of Windows will have "voice assist" installed. To be able to help you, they have to be able to hear you... See where I'm going with this.
If evesdropping is in fact happening with the Chrome Browser, can we trust Windows 10.
Before someone says I must work for the "Office of paranoid conspiracy", do some research and then, decide for yourself.
Just as a side note, odds are that if you do google a few key words in my post, the entire post may well show up as other GunBroker forum posts have.

Is he listening as well?
I do not allow cameras or microphones on my computers.
Same here. I also do not use speakers, because they are just microphones in reverse.

There is little piece of black tape over the lens on this laptop right now. I just don't trust the camera program being "off".[;)]
Listening is another topic...[8]

My computer has speakers, but I put a piece of tape over them to prevent them from being used in reverse.
Even if you are NSA, no power no listen...
Come on guys, my speakers have an on/off switch. Technology apparently two new for you?

Are those speakers still attached to the computer?
Not worried about the camera. If the light goes on and they want to see my mug. No problem.

You really think the light will be on EVERY time your camera is accessed by outside entities? Pretty simple task to defeat a software controlled indicator light.

Tape has never been known to have sound-deadening properties. Makes ya feel good though, doesn't it?

Yeah, and the computer is off most of the time. Speakers are always off when I am on. Not so much the female unit.

CCleaner is simple, free and does a good job of removing a lot of the things that need removed.

CCleaner works great for removing cookies and history and a host of other chores that need doing. It works for IE but not Firefox.
A simple Firefox add-on named Ghostery is a must have if you want to prevent being tracked while your on line.
