Good weed killer

I am not putting a garden in this year but don't want it to get overgrown with weeds. What is a good weed killer that will be safe for me to plant veggies in next year?

    round up

    glyphosphate

quote:Research suggests that glyphosate can persist in the soil for long period of time depending on the soil chemistry and climatic conditions. The half-life (time for half of a substance to breakdown) of glyphosate ranges from 2-200 days [1]. Hence it?s a bit of an unknown how long it?s going to stick around for once applied. It binds vigorously to soil particles and hence usually does not penetrate more than 15cm into the soil [1]. Therefore it is unlikely to impact on groundwater.

Glyphosate does not bioaccumulate. This means that it does not build up in the cells of animals instead it is expelled in urine and faeces [1]. In addition, it is considered to be non-carcinogenic and is relatively low in dermal and oral toxicity [1].
Half of the lives they tell about me aren't true.

For a hard first time kill, Round-UP then come back later with Atrazine and don't look back, great in fields and gardens plots where food products are grown and even effective in yards for weed control, just ask any Farmer [;)]

I use a flame thrower with unleaded 91 octane gasoline.

Not on windy days though or weeds next to privacy fences.

Do a google search before using Roundup. Seems a class action suit is being looked at because of possible carcinogens found in this weed killer.

Atrazine has a very long and strong residual effect. It is great for places you want to stay weed free for a long time but lots of stuff other than weeds will not grow there either, even the year after.

I like to use several layers of newspaper and grass clippings. Then next year when I plant till the whole thing in... I also used to use that in between rows. retains moisture, keeps the weeds down and augments the soil.

It's all in the mixture rate for intended uses & soil type, if in doubt he can contact any local county agent for recommendations [;)]

I did the whole grass clipping in Between rows last year and it worked. For the most part, for a while. But eventually the weeds started growing along the ground looking for a light patch to pop up through. Think about the weed growing normal for 12 inches. Now lay the whole thing on the ground with roots along the entire length. Damn things were impossible to pull.

Seems like I'd have to put a foot of grass clippings down to
Be effective. Also black plastic to cover my garden would cost over $200

    Beer.

    Lots of beer.

When the weeds begin to bother you, drink beer until it doesn't.
    Lather, rinse, repeat.

Eventually, frost or a good snow will knock it down.

Every week when I cut the grass, some of the clippings dressed up the rows. I did not have a large plot when doing that maybe 20x30

Roundup/glyphosphate kills by "translocating" to the roots and kill the plant from bottom up. Excellent for killing grass and weeds that have rhizomes, not so good on plain old broadleaf weeds.

What kind of weeds are you fighting? If it's broadleafs 2,4-D will do just fine, if it's grassy and viney then roundup might do the job.

A mix of Roundup/glyphosphate and Weed-b-Gone/2,4-D kills everything. Known at Casa de Dads as The Mixture of Death. If it's green, it dies.

another vote for vinegar with an added ingredient. 1/2 strength white vinegar/water, add about 5-6 drops of most any type of liquid dish detergent. that helps coverage on the big waxy leaves a lot of weeds have.
it breaks down the surface tension on the leafquote:Originally posted by MBK
    Vinegar

    Salt
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

If you never want anything to grow there again, a $4 bag of the cheapest water softener salt will do the job. But if it's a temporary closure, the vinegar mix described above is very good.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

For all y'all that recommend a chemical approach, a none too gentle reminder- from the first member of my family to ever have diabetes.

Agent Orange is a herbicide and defoliant chemical. It is widely known for its use by the U.S. military as part of its herbicidal warfare program, Operation Ranch Hand,[1] during the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1971.[2] It was a mixture of equal parts of two herbicides, 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D. In addition to its damaging environmental effects, the chemical has caused major health problems for many individuals who were exposed.

Vietnam is not the only place it was used- Test sites in the US have included Ft Dietrich Maryland, Ft. Gordon GA and Eglin AFB Florida.

I've thought of doing this as I have a tiller for my tractor. But I don't believe this would kill the weeds/grass. I'd like to effectively kill it.
