quote:BROOKINGS, Ore. - A Brookings man is dead after taking his life following a motor vehicle crash Saturday, Curry County Sheriff's Office said.
Around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff?s office received a 911 transfer call through the Brookings Police Department from a sheriff?s office off-duty reserve deputy who had come upon a vehicle that had crashed at the corner of North Bank Checto Road and Ferry Creek Heights.
The vehicle was in the ditch on its side and the reserve deputy assisted the driver out of the vehicle, the report said.
The driver, a 55-year-old Brookings man, was the lone occupant and, according to the reserve deputy, showed signs of intoxication.
Dispatch advised two patrol deputies, and they responded from north of Gold Beach.
A few minutes later and without warning, the man pulled a handgun out of his pocket and shot himself in the head, the sheriff's office said.
While Deputies were responding, a request was made to the Brookings Police Department for assistance. Brookings sent an officer who helped contain the scene and cover the body until the sheriff?s deputies arrived.
Brookings Fire Department arrived and helped contained the scene and provided traffic control as well.
The scene was investigated. The sheriff's office said a call was placed to the District Attorney and County Medical Examiner, who both authorized Redwood Memorial to remove the body.
"Next of kin was notified and the Curry County Sheriff?s Office will continue the investigation for a possible motive," the sheriff's office said in a news release.
Keep hearing the latest batch of meth is some real bad stuff.

At about 4:30 a.m., a LOPD officer initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle near Carman Dr. and Fieldstone. The officer approached the vehicle, and the driver, identified as Bill Paul Anderson, 46, reportedly reached out the window and pepper-sprayed the officer and drove off.
Bill Paul Anderson, 46, was arrested May 15, 2017 after allegedly pepper-spraying a Lake Oswego Police officer, and fleeing the scene. Photo provided by Lake Oswego Police Department.
After a brief pursuit, Anderson was located, but he then fled on foot. LOPD, with help from West Linn Police and Washington County Sheriff. set up a containment perimeter.
A K-9 unit was brought to the area by Tigard Police and found Anderson hiding inside a shed.
Anderson was arrested without further incident, and was lodged in Clackamas County Jail on warrants, and charges of assaulting a public safety officer, first-degree unlawful use of an electrical stun gun, tear gas or mace, and attempt to elude police.
The LOPD officer was treated at the scene by responding medics, and was not seriously injured.
