Ok so after changing the heater core the shift cable and an alternator recently I am still losing power and the new alternator is still not charging the battery I can make it to and from work then the gauge will drop to the red line and the truck will just about stall but wont shut off right when the pedal must be put clear to the floor to get it to move you can smell gas EGR line is removed so im guessing its unignited gas coming out the exhaust. My question is this why is the new alternator not charging the battery? 97 F-150 with a 4.2 V-6

starter relay, dirty battery connections (not trying to be a smarta$$), bad cable, sometimes it's something simple and dumb. A bad battery won't take a charge either, might have a bad cell.

There was an issue with a battery harness made too short.

My '01 Ranger had the issue. The schmucks at the stealership replaced the battery and screwed around with the truck for days, until I reminded them of the well-known flaw.

They found the harness, and replaced it with one of the proper length.

Batteries fail in the strangest ways now days. They don't heal themselves either.

My Truck one just gave up the Ghost. When I'm not using it i put it on a Battery tender. Well for the last two weeks I've been driving the Jeep. Tried to start the truck Battery was completely gone. At least it gave me a long life at least 6 years.

well I doubt its any of that as it starts fine every time just alternator isnt charging the battery. The battery takes a charge if I take it out of the truck and its fine for about a day or so if it was a starter relay wouldnt it not start? it starts up the first time every time otherwise. The old alternator tested bad.

All F150 problems are simply solved by buying a C1500. [:D]
