quote:UCLA has officially hired Chip Kelly as head coach, the team announced.

The deal will stretch five years at a total value of $23.3 million, according to Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports.

Kelly was expected to choose between vacancies at UCLA and Florida after meeting with officials from both programs, though the Gators reportedly dropped out of considering the former Oregon coach.

Former UCLA head coach Jim Mora Jr. was fired Nov. 19 after the team lost its third straight game. Jedd Fisch, the former offensive coordinator, has been acting as interim coach.

The Bruins became bowl-eligible with a win over Cal on Friday night.

Kelly has been working as a college football analyst after being fired from his position as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers following the 2016 season. He hasn't coached at the college level since 2012.

At least we won't play then except in a Division Playoff.

quote:After three years coaching the Eagles and one year coaching the 49ers, Chip Kelly returned to his college roots this year as the head coach at UCLA. It is not going well.

Kelly?s Bruins dropped to 0-4 on Friday night with a 38-16 loss to Colorado. It wasn?t just the fourth loss of the season but the fourth time the Bruins just didn?t look very competitive. UCLA?s remaining schedule doesn?t have any easy games on it, and an 0-12 finish is a real possibility.

Although Kelly entered the NFL with a reputation he had earned at Oregon as an innovator, he now looks more like the inventor of the BlackBerry: He was once ahead of the curve, but as competitors adapted he stagnated, and he has now fallen behind.

In San Francisco Kelly went 2-14, and he lost his last two games with the Eagles. Add those records to his four losses at UCLA and Kelly is 2-20 in his last 22 games as a head coach. For a coach who went 46-7 in four seasons at Oregon, that has to be hard to stomach.

Never did like the guy. Think he got his name from a Program set up by Mike Bellotti. Kelly left after all those players and some assistant coaches had left. He left cause he knoew he could not keep winning.

Kind of wonder how long he will stay there. Cause for the near future I do not see a win coming for him.
