When will a kitten understand to stay off table[:(!] Varmint is 2 mos old. Week ago, was caught munching on chicken i had bought in from the outside grill. Raising voice while pounding table with fist worked instantly. Cat did not learn for long, tried same thing with hamburgers, a few days later. Sprayed him off table with a water bottle. While fixing breakfast cat decides to get on table again to venture around again ! Now in the morning i am not in the best of mood, i was P.O,D to say the least. Empty soft plastic bottle was thrown from kitchen sink to table at a rate of speed that had some anger behind it. Kitten scrammed. I vowed to not get angry if it happens again and try a better solution, ALTHOUGH I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THAT SOLUTION IS ?? Any Cat people suggestions ?

    Double sided tape....

Put it on the counter, table etc where you dont want the cat...when it jumps and hits the tape, it will immediately jump off...few times and it wont go back on...they do not like it at all...

Also you might want to invest in something "high" for the cat...we have a table in the hallway the cats know is theirs...they watch out the window, and have a great time...one other place is the fridge, they love getting on top of it and "looking down" on ppl...cats love high spots...

One other thing, if your kitten was munching on food on the counter, it probably is trying to tell you its hungry..

The spray bottle works but you have to keep doing it until they get the message, conditioning is everything. if you cut them a break to early in training you have to start all over. good luck

We've always fed our cats on their own table. It wasn't till old Normy got senile that he wanted to eat off our table. Poor guy, struck down in his prime, 19.5yrs old.
We trained Murray to stay off the counters with some citrus based cleaner, just wiping some on the edge kept him off.

We let the cats on the counter with the computer, but not the counters where food is prepared. They never make a mistake. At least not when we are home. Cats are co-owners, don't make the mistake of thinking you are in charge. Adults learn what kittens don't learn so quickly. Listen to Black roses and try the tape.

Cats are VERY stubborn. We have a cat that STILL tries to get on the table.

Get a "Scat Mat" to stop this behaviour. Works VERY well, and you get the added bonus of seeing cats levitate when they step on it!

Spray bottle. After a while the cat will run in terror at the sight of the bottle, no spraying needed. You might be able to just leave the bottle on the table at that point.
Understanding is not the problem lol. You need to show them that bad things happen if they do stuff you don't allow.

Get some old fashioned wood and copper mouse traps, and bend the loop so that there's a gap at the end that would normally kill the mouse and set those around the area that you don't want the cat going. Might take a couple of tries, but one night my cat set off all 8 of them that we had put out. Didn't see the cat again for about 36 hours because she was sulking somewhere in the basement.

Cats will never truly learn to stay off stuff. They KNOW they're not supposed to be somewhere, but they'll just go there anyway. They get sneakier as they get older and wiser, and it's harder and harder to catch them in the act.

We spray ours with a water bottle too. Maybe some pepper spray would do better? Or put some ammonia in the water? I like the sticky tape idea. I bet that will work.

The trick with the spray bottle is that she cannot see it coming, she cannot see you associated with it. We used a small version of a Super Soaker, hid around the corner, then sprayed her from around the corner when she was not expecting it. Plain water. She got the message pretty quick.

I will tell you what worked for me:
I went out and got a burlap sack and put about 4 softball sized rocks in it.
When I caught the cat on the counter, I grabbed it up and stuffed it in the sack and tied the top shut.
Then I drove Kitty to the local lake and gave the sack a REAL hard toss.
Funny, I though cats could swim!
    Did I mention I don't like cats?
AND NO, I didn't really do this. Although I would if we had a cat in the house.

I never could understand why a buuch of gun-nuts/hunters would have such a problem with cats. Cats are pure hunter, one of the only species, other than humans, that hunt both from necessity and for the pleasure of the hunt.
    Can't stand the competition?

Easy, just put the dog on the table and then you won't have to worry about the cat getting up there.

Right you are, worked every time for me. [^] Works even better if you stick it to paper and just lay it on the table, counter top or whatever. Also prevents finish damage.

There is a condition that all animals get when they are taken away from there parents and siblings or previous owners. It is called "Separation Anxiety Syndrome". This may be what your kitten has. In order to help with his problem you must get another kitten.

If i am not mistaken it was sweden that recently passed a law that denied the ownership of just one cat in the home.

Mine just stay off when I am home.

You need to teach yourself not to leave anything out your kitten will like to eat. You are to blame for this.

PS mine have me well trained.[:D]
