Back in the late 60s or early 70 we had a guy win about 68 thousand dollars which was Big money then from the Irish Sweepstakes and all hell broke loose.
He got a silent phone number and somehow it got out and the phone kept ringing and the door bell was constant being rang.
Inlaws, NoLaws and outlaws just about everyone about drove him nuts and he kept working and had a heart attach on the job and never got to enjoy his money. His son and Wife carried on and he said never loan family members money.
a gal I worked with about 20 years ago
her aunt won a then big jackpot I do not recall but I think it was around six million maybe a tad more
any way she ( the aunt ) gave just about everyone in the family ( the close ones ) about 25 or 30k each and added in a polite way do not be asking for more [:D][:D][:D]
I would guess If I won I would just fall over dead but at least the wife and kids would be set [:D][:D][:D][:D]
well they could get a nice coffin [^][^][^]

Your chances of being struck by lightening are better, and you don't even have to buy a ticket. Lotteries are a tax on the mathematically challenged.
Maybe so, but you will not win if you don't have a ticket. I typically don't get a ticket, but this is bigger than that now. It eclipses other lotteries. It is now an event, and admission is $2.
I'm not driving to see the eclipse, but I will spend $2 for admission to the lotto event with a 650 million dollar door prize.
The higher it gets, the more people by tickets dropping your chances even further and proving my original point. If I don't buy a ticket I don't even lose $2.
And this proves my point. A carnival ride is more fun and exciting with the greater risk/reward.
The bigger the pot gets, the more excitement and value the $2 brings as entertainment, not investment. The odds don't change, either I win or I don't. That's 50/50 to me.

Your chances of winning are the same, but the potential for multiple winners reduces the potential overall payout.

Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

Very true. I look at it as buying a bunch of creative what-ifs ,which make me smile, for $2. I normally don't play unless the amount is ridiculous so it is self limiting in that way.
lottery winners and or families are usually destroyed by the money. I don't play. it would always be nice to not have to worry about money. but to be a Christian and have many millions would be a very big burden. money can and will destroy the best of folks with very good intentions.

A single ticket is a far better "investment" than 100 tickets, though.

All the people picking "lucky numbers" work against themselves. Random is best.

years ago there was a local couple that played their kids birthday dates, they both purchased a ticket and both won splitting the jackpot
but i have to disagree on it working against you, each time your numbers lose it increases the odds of them moving to the front line

There is no such thing as a voluntary tax. So, you would be incorrect.
Has nothing to do with math, more about greed, dreaming, fantasy and luck.
So as far as luck goes, why not nudge it in a positive direction?
Why buy car insurance? Health insurance? Death insurance? Are you mathematically challenged?

True. You give a bloke a million and he wants ten. Give them twenty, they want forty.
Yes, I bought a ticket, but I'm glad I have been spared from family bickering over that their share should be. [:)]
