Thousands of demonstrators are expected to turn out in Washington next week for protests aiming to "shut down" the inauguration of Donald Trump as the next U.S. president, organizers said on Thursday.
Protesters will attempt to close down 12 security checkpoints at the U.S. Capitol, where Trump will take the oath of office on Jan. 20, and along the 2.5-mile (4-km) parade route down Pennsylvania Avenue, according to leaders of a group called DisruptJ20.
"We want to shut down the inauguration," organizer David Thurston told a news conference. "We want to see a seething rebellion develop in this city and across the country."
A representative of the Trump transition team could not be immediately reached for comment, nor could a spokesman for the District of Columbia police.
After a deeply polarizing campaign, Trump's surprise victory in the Nov. 8 election has inflamed passions across the political spectrum.
The Republican president-elect's supporters embrace his brash, no-nonsense style and image as an astute problem-solver. His detractors are dismayed by what they see as an authoritarian bent and an array of provocative policy pronouncements.
DisruptJ20, which is working with Black Lives Matter and other protest groups, said it also planned predawn blockades and disruptive demonstrations during inaugural balls in the evening.
Some 300 DisruptJ20 volunteers will work to mobilize demonstrators for a series of protests the group has dubbed the "Festival of Resistance."
"We are not in favor of a peaceful transition of power, and we need to stop it," organizer Legba Carrefour said.
The group has three protest permits and "promises other surprises," said spokeswoman Samantha Miller.
All told, 27 protest groups have been granted permits, more than four times the average number for past inaugurations, according to the National Park Service.
The Women's March, on the day after the inauguration, is expected to attract 200,000 people, said the park service, which issues permits.
TIGHT SECURITY
The inauguration is expected to draw 800,000 spectators, according to officials. That compares with some 1.8 million attending Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration as America's first black president, one of the largest crowds ever to gather in the U.S. capital for such an event.
Protest organizers said they were concerned with the potential for violent clashes with Trump supporters.
"We are definitely worried about our safety, so we'll be training to help keep people safe," Miller said.
The group will have to navigate tight security provided by three dozen law enforcement agencies, including the Capitol Police, FBI, Secret Service, National Park Service and National Guard.

Security will include more than 3,200 police officers from departments across the country, 8,000 members of the National Guard and an additional 5,000 active-duty military members.
Security costs have exceeded $100 million, officials said.
Last week, interim D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham told reporters that authorities were ready for any attempt to disrupt the festivities.
"The fact that you have some folks that are indicating on social media that they're coming to shut down the inauguration events is something that we will be prepared for," Newsham said.

If not for a peaceful transition then they must be for a violent transition. I think perhaps they haven't quite thought this through.[:o)][:o)]
Yeah - the loons are afraid that Trump supporters are going to beat on them - when in truth it's the loons who have beat on Trump supporters in more than one instance.
If violence breaks out, I'll be cheering for the bikers.
I am so tired of this crap...

Anti-Trump Activists Plan Road-Blocking 'Clusterf--k' for Inauguration
A moderate effort plans to picket the parade route, but a more radical rabble seeks to shut down the show.
By Steven Nelson | Staff Writer Dec. 15, 2016, at 1:40 p.m.
The last time a Republican was elected president after losing the popular vote, George W. Bush's inaugural parade turned into a tunnel of boos and rude signs, as eggs - and some protesters - flew over security fences toward the motorcade.
Organizers anticipate even more visible dissent when Donald Trump rolls down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the White House on Jan. 20.
One major faction plans an orderly but large demonstration along the parade route. But a more radical effort operating under the tagline "no peaceful transition" seeks to block major roads into the nation's capital and prevent foot traffic from reaching security checkpoints along the route.
"So, we're going for what I'd generally term a clusterf--k," says Legba Carrefour, a local anarchist handling press for the more radical protest-organizing network DisruptJ20, which has more than 1,700 Facebook group members.
"We are planning to shut down the inauguration, that's the short of it," he says. "We're pretty literal about that, we are trying to create citywide paralysis on a level that I don't think has been seen in D.C. before. We're trying to shut down pretty much every ingress into the city as well as every checkpoint around the actual inauguration parade route."
Carrefour says more than 200 people attended an organizing meeting at a local church Sunday on short notice. Photos show supporters representing a range of ages and interests. A member of the antiwar group Code Pink posed with a sign, as did people upset about Trump's comments on Muslims, women and policing.
"Rapists deserve hell, not the White House," one woman's sign said.
Members of various progressive groups are involved in DisruptJ20, but as individuals rather than institutional representatives, Carrefour says. The group's website describes it as being assisted by the DC Welcoming Committee collective of experienced activists.
Protest plans often are overambitious and it's unclear if there will be enough bodies or sacrificial vehicles to block roadways, or people willing to risk arrest by doing so, though Carrefour says the group has coordinated housing for a large number of out-of-town visitors and believes preliminary signs point to massive turnout.
The more moderate planning effort is led by the ANSWER Coalition - an acronym that stands for Act Now to Stop War and End Racism. New York organizer Ben Becker says the group is seeking to stage an enormous demonstration along the route near the White House, assuming they are given permission for a spot that's traditionally captured by national TV cameras.
Carrefour says DisruptJ20 has no publicly announced plans to jump barricades along the inauguration parade route or throw projectiles at the new president, but that autonomous direct actions are encouraged.
"I can't comment on specific stuff we're doing like that, mostly because that would be illegal. But, yeah, it will get pretty crazy, I expect," he says. "'Have fun!' I say."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_state_car_(United_States)
though unknown, the current presidential state car is speculated to be much heavier than its predecessor as it is equipped with Goodyear Regional RHS tires that are usually reserved for medium- and heavy-duty trucks; speculated weights range from 15,000 to 20,000 pounds (6,800 to 9,100 kg).[13] Due to the excess weight, the car can only reach about 60 mph (97 km/h) and only achieves 3.7 to 8 miles per US gallon (64 to 29 L/100 km; 4.4 to 9.6 mpg-imp).[3][12] The current model of limousine costs between US$300,000[1] and $1.5 million.[12] The presidential state car is maintained by the United States Secret Service.[14]

The doors of the presidential state car have no keyholes; the way to open the passenger doors on the limousine is a secret known only to the Secret Service.[15] It has more 5-inch (130 mm)-thick[16] bulletproof glass than the previous model,[17] and only the driver's window opens (to pay tolls).[11] It also has run-flat tires, and an interior which is 100% sealed to protect the occupants in the event of a chemical attack.[17] The current presidential state car boasts rocket-propelled grenades,[16] night vision optics, a tear gas cannon, on-board oxygen tanks, an armored fuel tank filled with foam to prevent explosion, pump-action shotguns,[1][12] and 2 US pints (0.95 l; 1.7 imp pt) of blood in the president's blood type.[11] The current presidential state car can also fire "multi-spectrum infrared smoke grenades as a counter-measure to a rocket-propelled grenade attack or anti-tank missiles."[15] The car features 8-inch (200 mm)-thick doors. General Motors spokeswoman Joanne K. Krell said of the new presidential state car, "The presidential vehicle is built to precise and special specifications, undergoes extreme testing and development, and also incorporates many of the top aspects of Cadillac's 'regular' cars -- such as signature design, hand-cut-and-sewn interiors, etc.
