Reading about the rescue efforts in South TX and LA I see pictures of people that are not law enforcement but are armed.

I saw several pictures of guys open carrying handgun and several guys with shotguns in boats.

There was one video of a guy guarding a small store with a shotgun. He was chasing off people in the video(All were Bl*ck).

I am glad that they did not do a Katrina and start confiscating guns from people.

Not all people in Texas are armed and permitted. These people count on their neighbors when the chips are down.
    However circumstances can vary.

Lot's of reasons to be armed. Of course the everyday reason of "just in case". But animals that are displaced and become aggressive, or one that needs put down due to injury etc. Then there's the increased chance of crossing paths with a human predator trying to take advantage of the situation.

If I was running a boat down there I would have 2 handguns, one in a pocket and one in a shoulder holster, then a long gun in the boat.

I agree if I was running a boat I would have one on my hip and one in a shoulder holster.

I think I would have a Rifle in the boat too.

...better to have and not need. As always, under less than ideal conditions, especially here where the law is spread thin or non-existent, '...one is none and two is one'. Predators recognize sheep...be a sheep dog, not a volunteer victim.

Apparently, there has been a lot of guns lost that way when the boat turns over.

a lot of people do not realize how dangerous these situations can be, while it may not effect the rest of the world to many people it is the end of the world as we know it

just like the tsunami of 2004, it was the end of the world for a quarter of a million people, and felt like it to many more

I live out in a rural area. I don't walk out of the house without a sidearm, much less go anywhere.

A Louie L'Amour quote applies here:

A man who starts imagining that others think good because he does is simply out of his mind.

When I put my pants on in the morning I am armed.

I live out in the sticks and I carry everywhere, at the least I have a S&W M38 in my pocket and a speed loader in the other. I have a shotgun and a 22 rifle in the barn and another 22 in the garage, both are loaded and easy to get to but not out in the open.

In a situation lake that I would be armed. I would stay away from the evacuation shelters if I could.

They disarm you at the shelters.

Another great reason to be armed there in Houston is they have spotted gators and I bet all kinds of poisonous snakes are swimming about.

They're for the gators cruising through the streets.

The big stores aren't messing around either both Walmart and Kroger have armed guards working, and Kroger is limiting the number of customers in the stores.

Thankfully i am always armed left and right and sometimes I even carry a firearm [:D]

I think it would be somewhat fool hardy to be out there without any defensive equipment.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

The shotgun in the boat works great on snakes.

I'm so glad I live in a civilized northern state of Illinois where one does not need to wear a gun to go outside or to town.
