BAGHDAD, Iraq - An Iraqi tennis coach and two of his players were shot to death this week in Baghdad because they were wearing shorts, authorities said Saturday, reporting the latest in a series of recent attacks attributed to Islamic extremists.
In the shooting, gunmen stopped a car carrying the Sunni Arab coach and two Shiite players, asked them to step out and then shot them, said Manham Kubba secretary-general of the Iraqi Tennis Union.
Extremists had distributed leaflets warning people in the mostly Sunni neighborhoods of Saidiyah and Ghazaliyah warning people not to wear shorts, police said.
"Wearing shorts by youth are prohibited because it violates the principals of Islamic religion when showing forbidden parts of the body. Also women should wear the veil," the leaflets said.
No one claimed responsibility for the slayings, which come amid worries that Islamic extremism is spreading in the war-torn country.
Sunni cleric Eid al-Zoubayi denounced the attack.
"Islamic religion is an easy religion and it allows wearing sport shorts as long as they don't show the forbidden parts of the body, so the acts that are targeting the sport are criminal," he said.
It was the second incident involving athletes in just over a week. Fifteen members of a taekwondo team were kidnapped in western Iraq while driving to a training camp in neighboring Jordan on May 17.

That report can't possibly be true, and is a malicious rumor started by either W, Dick Cheney, or Halliburton.
Wouldn't a story such as this help prove how BAD things are going in Iraq, that Islamic Fundamentalism is taking root there when it never existed there before? Aren't Bush and Cheney the ones who are always talking about how good the Iraqi people are and how much progress is taking place there?
They tell the girls that their navel showing in church is a sin. Spegetti straps are the mark of a who re and no bra is an abomination to god.
Intolerence should be an abomination to all the gods.
The Baptist churches around here aren't much different but they can't kill you.

Wow, I'd burn fer sure....
But seriously, who makes up these rules? Surely not someone who has ever had to wear a bra? In fact, there are many men out there who OUGHT to be made to wear a bra...[xx(]

ROL,
I can't tell you who makes them up but I can tell you who doesn't. Folks that tend to their own affairs and have a live and let live attitude. People that are usually in good spirits and bring cheer to all they meet. You seldom find someone that doesn't accept superstitous dogma to fault your choice of apparal or any personal choice you make for that matter.
Wow. That is progress.
Maybe they will get smart enough to pass conceal carry rights and prevent future slaughters.....naaaaah.
lets all send more shorts
Best in show!!!
I just got back from doing some shopping at a local grocery store. There was a white kid walking in front of me through the aisle. He was wearing baggy pants hanging down below his butt cheeks, showing his black boxer shorts. I don't know what was holding his pants up. That's when I understood why someone might shoot you because of what you're wearing...
