Go get a potato. break 4 tooth picks in half, put 4 on each side for feet. Then, break two more in half. Take two halves and put raisins on them, put them for eyes. Continue putting other two halves in the head for antennas.

You have a potato bug! Shall I make one and demonstrate?

Upon making the potato bug, I found out a red ink pen has busted in my paper drawer. [B)][B)]

this is what we call them potato bugs or sow bugs around here and they eat only decaying vegtable matter and actually do the garden good

    SAWZ

We call these potato bugs also. When you touch them they get defensive and curl up into a ball and then you can roll them away. I don't see as many as I used to but they are still around.

Adults a bit bigger than an M&M- black and white stripes running front to back, Larval stages smaller, reddish brown. EGGS laid underside plant leaf, flat cluster of tiny round golden or brownish eggs.

Early morning, pan of water with a few drops of dish detergent- hold under plant, tap plant, they fall into water, sink. You can use Sevin dust (again, early morning while plants are damp with dew, makes powder stick) While Sevin is fairly benign, if you are trying to go the pure organic route, use Neem oil. Made from the Neem tree, makes the larva sick, they never become adults. Sevin works better, tho.

Untreated, they will strip a potato plant to the bare stem in a day or two- then go after your tomatoes.
