Ok so I am buying one. The good (really nice) store so far is giving me a better deal than bluenile.com or any other place I have seen.
1.5 c , I color, S1 clarity @ $6,800
1.21 c, H color, S1 clarity @ $5,844
Anyplace else I should look?

Why would anyone want a diamond that big?...they are so fake looking and gaudy....I have never liked large jewellry, whether its just a gold/silver pendant or diamond ring etc, too large is ugly...

I think it makes good sense to buy "used" "preowned" diamonds and then have them reset in a new ring. Jewelers actually dont charge that much for a custom setting(compared to the retail cost of ring) and you can buy the biggest used diamond you want for about 25% or cost of buyiung new in a ring.

Diamonds are a scam, promoted by DeBeers (sp?).
The "Diamond is forever" slogan is to convince us to keep diamonds in the family, to pass it on from generation to generation.
This insures a tight supply, so the price is always artificially inflated. Not to mention they control the availability of diamonds in the market in the first place. Diamonds are just rocks, remember that. They are only useful for industrial applications.

I bought my wife a 1ct for our wedding back in '94.
Then I learned the facts about DeBeers, the diamond syndicate, the Apartheid policies DeBeers helped create in So. Africa to enslaved laborers busting their backs for peanuts to mine these rocks, etc.

In this day and age, lab created diamonds are flawless, better than the real ones. Unfortunately, women want and in many cases require their men to provide these real rocks to them, to show them how much we love them. What a scam.

Remember though, as per DeBeers: You should spend a minimum of three months salary on your lady's rock. Otherwise, according to them, you don't love her enough. Again, what a scam.

Used diamond? let's see now, a diamond is only what? 20-30 million years old........What could someone possibly have done to one over the last 40-60 years!!!!!
I bought my wifes engagement ring in 1984 in the "estate" (used) jewelery section, the platinum setting was marked 1958 C.D. Peacock. I spent alot less and got ALOT more than anyone else I know! AND no one else has one just like it!
I wouldn't buy any diamond on line from a "diamond dealer/broker". I'd find a local INDEPENDENT jeweler that you can trust.
EDUCATE yourself. Talk to people. Don't count out private transactions where BOTH parties are happy!
Good luck, just my thoughts on it..........Ed

I sold a 1 ct diamond sol. with great color...no carbon visable (even through a loop)...in the pawn shop for $1,000.00 You should call around and get a few prices. You may be able to at least get the stone and have it set for 1/10 th of what you are talking about spending. You need to get the stone apraised and covered by your home owners insurance no matter what you get.

    B-I-N-G-O!!

Take this advice, buy the rock pawnstyle then have a jeweler remove the stone and have it set in a new setting/ring! You will save many $$$$$$$!!

Dano is right they are a total scam pushed by debeers. There are a lot coming out of india now and debeers are buying them up for just a few dollars a ct,.If you want a diamond do as the others have suggested buy second hand save yourself a lot of money.Jewelers mark up on new jewelery is very high.

Diamonds are way over rated. If you knew what the jewelers paid for them and what the mark up is you would freak! The best thing you can do is to find a local gem and mineral club or better yet a show and do some serious talking. You will end up with a better stone at a fraction of the price.

AMEN! Buy diamonds used from pawn shops! THat's were I bought my wife's 1ct. Color is better than clarity. People notice color. People don't notice small flaws inside the diamond.

There are a LOT of pawn shop diamonds out there....I have an idea that maybe you would like to try. There are a LOT of medium sized stones out there in the pawn shops out there. These are 1/4 to 1/2 ct diamonds....usually in the butt-ugliest settings.

If you go around swooping up the good stones you can grab....at a real deal..."cash out the door" price and the quantity of items you buy will bring your discount price down even more.

You have to pick things out....ask the lowest price available...move on to something else and ask the lowest price on the second item...then ask a total price for BOTH....they will discount the items even MORE if you are buying more than one thing (and have cash.)

Then you go to the la-te-da jewelry store...to get an appraisal on your stones. In all it could work out that you get the appraisal and can turn around and have the stones you are holding with the appraisal to barter for the HUMUNGOUS thing you really want.

    At the pawn shop....
    One ring.....$450....cash discount...$375
Second ring..$500...two ring purchase and cash discount...$700

With a total of two rings purchased with clear stones you could have a total of 2 to 3 ct in stones alone...then a little added gold value. If you have them appraised, take the value to "trade in" on a BIG stone....you may even find what you want in one of the hunt for these deals.

never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never let a jeweler talk you into leaving jewelry to be cleaned, never, never, never let jewelry out of your sight....did this once with a 1/4 carat high grade diamond & didnt find out till about a year later that it had been changed out for junk...found out how that family of jewelers got rich by confirming this tale with other customers...but what can you prove by then???

Advice on checking for used jewelry is excellent advice. The markup on new diamond jewelry is around 4-500%. Find a nice old ring, good looking stone, classy setting- and tell her you have a family heirloom/ classy antique for her. Some of the older rings are 16 ct gold instead of the standard 14, and may have platinum mounts. DO check the stone carefully for chips- diamonds are hard but brittle. DO check security of the stone in the mount. DO ask for right of return for refund within a few days- and have another jeweler check it to be sure you did not snag a lovely cubic zirconium.
