Hotter than standard-pressure ammunition, but not as hot as +P+. I'm waiting for something called ++P++, which will make you P your pants +++, and then some.

There are only a few cartridges that TRULY carry a +P designation. They are loaded "hotter"- or to a higher pressure, than the standard max load for that caliber. Load is still much less than a "Proof load". Pressures like:

    38 Special- 17,000 38 Special +P- 18,500 PROOF 22,100
    9mm 35,000 9mm +P- 38,500 PROOF 45,500 and so on.

Some cartridges, such as the .38 Super, are ALL designated as +P.

There is an unofficial +P+ load- hotter than a +P, but not recognized by SAAMI, the standards setting group for ammo makers. There is also no OFFICIAL +P load for many calibers, such as .32 auto, .44 Mag, etc.
