..There are so many that somewhere there must be someone
looking into them to see who's legit and who spends more
money on "administrative costs". Guess you can't go too wrong
with the VFW, Legion and USO, but does anyone rate the rest?

Many of the "charitable" groups are rated by Charitywatch.org.

And while there are a lot of scum sucking bassturds that are skimming, I would like to take this opportunity to plug my favorite charity- Fisher House.

They provide group living and meals for families of GIs at military/ VA hospitals all over the US. No govt support, listed as one of the 10 best charities in the US. Besides money and time, you can also donate frequent flyer miles to them. The airlines will sometimes match your contribution of miles.

The Purple Heart Foundation collects money at Wal-mart stores. I looked into how they use the money and was not at all impressed. They threatened me with libel/slander charges but nothing I said was untrue.

In some states "charitable" fund raisers can put as little as 5% towards the stated cause and still operate tax free.
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

Charity Navigator is a good resource for evaluation of charitable organizations and their expense patterns.

Some of the good, some of the not so good-

Part of the problem- similar names. You can have the Royal Order of the Wet Mongoose, and the Order of the Wet Mongoose Foundation- and they are 2 entirely separate groups. But the list on that link up there ^^^ will give you a start.
