I live in what is classified as a "High Mountain Desert". Since late Feb. we have had more rain then we got in the last I'd say 3 - 5 years. Everything is green, and soggy. Usually by this time of year things are turning brown, and the fire danger is on the rise. Weather patterns must be shifting.

Been the coldest May I can remember in this neck of the woods. My wife says it's not that much different, it's just that old folks always think it's cold.

We've got just the opposite problem. It has rained so much that there are lots of the crops that have not even been planted yet. Most of the corn is planted, but what hasn't been is being shifted to beans in many cases. It has been so cold that many fields of corn are still trying to emerge 2-3 weeks after it has been planted. The soil has crusted enough that some of the farmers were getting out the old rotary hoe to try to break it up, then we got enough rain to soften it again, so we may not have to do any more of that. Wierd year so far.

farming here in sc kansas hasnt been real fun the last two years...been a lot windier than seems normal, even if we would get a shower .2 to .5 it doesnt help if next three days are 35+ mph wind. have no doubt in my mind that mankind has really had an impact on natural conditions

yea it has not been real fun here either...though last year pulled out some really good crops...just west of me they have been hammered for 6-7-8 years now...we have had here some pretty bad years real close together...to close for my liking....if it cools off a bit and starts raining right now we could end up with good spring wheat and corn...but every second is very very serious now!

It just runs in cycles. The "Dust Bowl" of the 30's was bad, but there had been wet years before and after that run. Many of the all-time cold records here in Indiana were set in the 60's and early 70's (watch the weather record dates on the news) and "they" were predicting a new ice age. We had a couple years in a row where we got planted in April around here and people started to think we had totally changed our patterns, now we're back to what we had for most of the 80's. It's part of the game, and the only thing that's never going to change is that it's always going to change.

This Spring has ben pretty wet and a litle on the cool side, comparatively speaking. It does seem like weather patterns are "shifting" somewhat. This past Tues. the last part of my yard had finaly dried enough that I could finish mowing it, after threats of rain allday yesterday it came a storm last night like you wouldn't believe. When I looked at the weather Fri. night they had predicted a "chance" of scattered showers, mostly South of us. Don't know what to make of the weather, anymore [?]

How is all of this going to affect the bird crop? I feel for you farmers and ranchers at the mercy of nature. If one crop don't come in maybe the other will.

Having lived on a coastal desert (9"-11"/Yr.) for the last
50 years I'm absolutely mesmerised when I stand in the
rain. I can't imagine maintaining a livelihood that is 90%
or more dependant on the weather. You certainly have
    my admiration.

I hope things turn around for you. [8D]

The sunflowers I planted for a dove field are just starting to stick through the ground. They will be OK in the long run, but they are unlikely to mature as much as they should by the time the season starts Sept. 1. I don't really care about the quality or quantity of the seed they produce since they won't be harvested, just so enough mature in time to do some shooting.

The cold, wet weather is likely to kill off some of the first hatch of doves since they are a somewhat fragile bird. That will have a serious effect upon the harvestable bird crop come fall, since they are the majority of the good birds available to shoot come fall. Dove's have around a 90% winter dieoff, so the carry over population is not what you depend upon to have some good shooting.

cowdoc.....are you close to Oahe?...A few years back, Cath and I sat in a motel room for three days, waiting for it to quit raining so we could go fishin'. It was worth the wait. We had no clue on how to fish the lake, but caught at least five species of fish. We'll be back there one of these days. We needed the rest anyway. We drove nonstop from S. of Chicago to Mitchell. That's one loooong haul.

That was meant as a sorta left-hand joke.Sorry if I hit a thin spot.
Here on the Or coast we have a saying that goes "Oregonians don't tan in the summer, they RUST".
Wishing you the best with your crops.

Cowdoc, we still can't get in to plant ours. I think I may be able to put the drill in a field or two tomorrow afternoon with some beans, but it's going to be touchy. We don't dare plant too wet in these clay soils, or it will seal up like concrete and the seeds can't break through the crust. Sure wish we could share a little of this rain with you, we have more predicted for the next two days.

Somethings strange, we have more dove in the city then we've ever had in the past. Its been building up for the past three years. We have more ducks and geese hanging around also. When I was a kid the dove would nest all over the river, thier nesting in a pine tree out front now.We have not had a very good rain for awhile. Its just plain strange.I water my yard once a week, and have three types of birds taking a bath. The sparrow, dove, and some large goofy black bird. The black bird can make more funny noises then most birds.

The good news here in NE Colorado is; without spring rains, we haven't had the cheat-grass grow up two foot tall so there's less fuel on the ground.
The bad news; It's so hot and dry that everything else is tinder-dry and just waiting for that one * to flick a lit cigarette out the window on highway 14.
It's so dry the trees are whistling.
    For dogs.

......abc, maybe I missed something, but I can't help wondering the reason behind the crack, "play farmer". It seems crass when addressing someone who depends on a crop for everything from food on their table to clothes on their back. I have to assume therefore, that you produce all your own food, never go to a supermarket and are totally self sufficient.......Just wonderin'......

We tried the beans today, but the soil was still wet enough that the no-till drill was leaving slits that would never close up in these soils, so we quit. We'll try again tomorrow if it doesn't rain, but it is popping lightning all around us and there are "severe" storm warnings out.

We tried the beans again today, but quit because the soil was just too wet. The largest farmer in the area, who has to push to plant the large number of acres he farms, just replanted about 600 acres around my farm because he planted it too wet the first time. They have farmed lots of acres in some other areas of the county with different soil types and have tried to push the ground conditions here based on what they do on their home farm. Sorry, that doesn't work in this ground.

We just got more rain and are out of the fields for at least three, maybe four, days again at the current time. I will probably spend the time clearing a couple of fencerows of some trees that have grown up that need to be removed. That should provide some good wood for the fireplace this winter. A little couch time with the wife on a cold winter night isn't all bad.[:)]
