This may be a real stupid question. Are unloaded firearms allowed in safety deposit ( security boxes ) inside bank for storage?

I think you ought to read the small print on the agreement.

It shouldn't be a problem - but I guess the bank itself can make that restriction if they want to.

I'm trying to find safe deposit boxes large enough to hold several rifles.

I am talking about Pistols, no long guns. My bank gives me a free one and I have nothing in it. Just well see if I can store some pistols I do not shoot.

Sure. It's the best place to store that one-of-a-kind $25,000 revolver.

Banks are very particular about privacy with safety deposit boxes.

They don't ask what you're putting in them, and they offer you a private room to use while getting in your box.

There are no restrictions that I'm aware of, but the bank would not know anyhow, since they do not stick around to see what you store in the box. Just remember that when one of the owners of the box dies, it is supposed to be opened the next time with some form of representative (varies, state to state) who will record and evaluate the property for estate tax purposes. It is always a good idea if someone becomes terminally ill to move any valuables possible to another location until after the final inspection. You can move them back after the inspection at your leisure.
Tax evasion is illegal, tax avoidance is an art form.
