Propane gone bad?

I have a 5lb tank of propane I use when I go camping. I couldn't light my stove, so I thought the stove was bad. I got out my propane lamp and tried to light it, and no luck. Tried a small 16oz canister of propane and the lamp lit up perfectly. Is it possible for the gas to go bad in a refillable tank?

Actually I've got a tank of bad propane on my grill right now.

It is full, and there is "airflow" but for some reason, it sputters and doesn't burn hot enough. I've just not gotten around to changing it out, and with winter just around the corner, I don't see a need to do that right now.

    [8D]Alright, I was being a smart a##-

--Propane BEVER really goes bad, but wild temp inversions can cause problems--

--insects, bugs earwigs and debris can cause valve and fitting MALFUCTIONS--

--Also NEVER store the propane tank on it's side or the escaping gas will be contaminated--

Someone stole all your propane and replaced it with air.

If it was a new tank, the filler should have purged out the compressed air first that is used in testing it. Otherwise, you have all air at first.

I had a simialiar problem with my BBQ grill on a full tank of C3H8. There should be a little valve below the obvious hook-up for the fuel lines. Its just big enough to have a flat head screwdriver fit into it. I 'blead' it for about 30 seconds, and closed the valve. I waited a couple of minutes, and the grill lit up perfectly.

Dont know if this will fix your problem, but it helped on mine.

Propane is an extremely light fraction from the refining of crude oil and does not go "stale" or "bad" with time. One of the advantages of propane is that if you keep an emergency generator around which is uses propane as it's fuel, that generator will always be ready for service when the chips are down. A gasoline fueled generator will probably be gummed up and worthless unless you replaced it's fuel a few times during each year.
