A bit intimidated

So I was in the line at the chow hall this morning. I had just gotten off a 13 hour shift, still covered in grease, oil, probably some feces, and I smelled like total *. You'll never guess who got in line behind me. None other that the 4 star PACAF commander, and guess who wanted to talk to me. I hate that. I'll talk to any officer but when it comes to a general, I'm a bit intimidated especially when I'm not representing the Air Force's finest. He could've talked to any other airman in the place but why did he pick the most disheveled looking person in the building?

Cat-You probably looked liked the only guy around who had done ANY
WORK that day. Consider those dirty clothes and grease a badge of
    HONOR. Sir, I salute you.

I was definitively a sight. I was wearing a set of ABUs. My top was perfectly clean and pressed but my pants were so stained they looked black.

Generals are usually regular guys. they've arrived already, got nothing else to prove! (not like a Lt Col or full bird who's still looking to get to the top!).
when I was an O4 in the army, waiting to be seen in the outpatient clinic, I struck up a conversation with a guy in civilian clothes.
we ended up leaving the clinic at the same time and i asked him if he wanted to go to the O club for a beer. (I was still thinking he was a retired 1st sarge, or maybe a dependent!)
the bartender greets him "Good evening General XXXXX, what will you have?"
First time in my life i ever stuttered uncontrolled! not sure if i eventually peed myself or it was just the first beer that i dumped in my lap. (i did it twice!)[:0]
    tom
    BTW, I KNOW Lt Col's are a-holes cause I was one before i separated.[:D]

As a crew chief I'm accustomed to being real frank and direct with officers so it takes some effort to use proper courtesy.

You are so correct on all points that it's not even funny.

Agreed about General officers being different from other officers, same as E-9's tend to have a different attitude than other NCO's.

Besides having nothing to prove, to a degree they're both allowed to function using common sense and judgement. Not much room for that in the other ranks.

I think the worst part of the entire thing was not being able to stand upright because I wrenched my back again.

Times have changed. In the old days we had to get into a clean uniform of the day to eat breakfast, dinner or supper. A Master-At-Arms was at the chow line to enforce it. I remember how happy I was when the fearless leaders decided it was OK for us to eat in clean dungarees. I understand some shore stations let people eat the evening meal in civilian clothes now.

I'm glad they've eased up on you guys a little, but I still feel a little sorry for the poor SOB in a clean uniform of the day who sits in the grease spot in the seat you just left. [:D]
The road to hell is paved with COMPROMISE.

    congratulations

My first thought when I saw your post was they finally let you out of jail to report in to us.

Where is that brother of yours?

    Longer jail term?

I used to lift weights with General Luck (FT Bragg Commander) during Operation Desert Shield...before the crap hit the fan. He was one of the nicest, laid back guys around.

Dont worry about rank, generals are people too, just make sure you dont go overboard and try and have some idea what that general does... When we hauled stars they were nice enough and when they got up before the seatbelt sign went off they were more than happy to sit right back down. No biggie they just like to think they know whats going on.... so tellem the truth, without getting mad.

Well, breakfast falls at the end of my shift, I work 1800 to around 0730. My paints were trashed and my top was clean because when I work I don't wear my ABU or BDU top depending on what uniform I'm wearing. It just t-shirts, pants, and boots. If it wasn't so rainy and hot I'd be wearing my pickle suit like I do in Minot.

They would like it if we'd wear clean uniforms to chow but we're crew chiefs, we like to look how we're treated.
