My 2006 Taurus is going to be paid off within the next 4 months. I know, it never should've taken that long but too late now. I'm thinking now that I have a dependable transport I want a fun car. I'll definetly be paying cash for it. I'm thinking of a MkIII or MKIV VW Golf GTi with the 2.8 VR6. A buddy of mine has what's basically a Jetta GLi with that engine and it's a fun, solid car. Also, with the Golf, a hatch is a handy practical car.

To each his own--never considered any new model VW as a "fun" car. To me a fun car would be something with muscle--like one of the new Challengers, Camaro's, Mustang or a Jeep/Landcruiser.

I auto cross and the Golf GTi/Jetta GLi are good handling, peppy little cars. The aftermarket for the Mk3/4 cars is really solid. Also, it'll be a practical car on top of it all.

consider one that gets really good gas mileage..i gotta gut feeling gas price is going way up as obama keeps shutting down energy production here...we bought a suzuki sx4 hatchback awd in 2009 getting 26-30 mpg...wife loves awd kick in for bad weather

The way people tend to drive WRX/STi's I will not buy one used. I like the mk3/4 VWs. I've gotten to know the inner workings of the Mk3 very well over the past 5 years, including a 4 to 6 cylinder drivetrain swap. They're surprising little cars.

New WRX is damn near what the Sti is.... But I agree. Sti is sick!

There's something about the solid build quality of a VW. Also, I don't want to be in the whole "ricer" crowd.

I would check on prices for parts. I think on that car a tune up would be expensive. I had a Audi one time and a radiater hose was 80 dollars. It was only about 14 inches long. Nothing special.

Most all of the average tune up parts are available over the counter at NAPA or O'Reilly's. The Mk3 isn't as obscure of a car as some people tend to believe.
