Never did develop a taste for coffee, and find that mtn. dew works pretty good. Some say a can has six times the caffiene that a cup of java does.

Never drank coffee. I have wondered why someone will talk down to me about beer drinking while "having" to have a cup of coffee before they are "right" in the mornings. Don

dcon12; You should be ashamed of yourself for drinking beer. Your habit is the downfall of this country, and has killed more folks than Pol Pot. I shake my finger at you and say NO,NO,NO. Take some pride in yourself man. Get all your beer gathered up. Place it all in a box and put it out on your patio. I will be right over to rid you of all that brown bottle sin........I myself will repent at a later date[:D]

I started with mtn dew and went to coffee.

In spite of the fact that dew has more caffiene, i think the hot tempature of coffee actually delivers the caffiene better.

I like cofee with chicory, there are a few brands that add it. I am also a sucker for waffle house coffee. (a lot more than starbucks or any of those places) It is a little mild but tastes great. The downside is being so close to the temptation of bacon......

We use various "8 o'clock" whole bean coffees, ground by us in the store and kept in a sealed container in the freezer. Has lots of fresh aroma when used in the morning.

I order unroasted Tres Rios bean from a grower in Costa Rica. I then roast them myself at home in small batches so that my coffee is consumed within a week of it being roasted. I usually brew it in a French Press with filtered water that is heated just short of boiling.

I just roasted a batch this morning, and am enjoying a mug while I type this. Today I used a light roast, and with those beans it yielded an incredibly rich, yet mild flavor with no trace of bitterness. The caffeine content is through the roof, and there is almost a hint of sweetness to it because there hasn't been time for oxidation to start bringing out the bitterness.

It is just about the finest coffee I have ever had in my life, and significantly cheaper than good quality pre-roasted beans. You can keep the unroasted beans for much longer than you can the roasted ones (1yr+ as opposed to the week you get before bitterness starts to set in from oxidation of the roasted beans), so you can buy in bulk for a discount.

Roasting only took me less than 15 minutes from the time I put them in the oven to the time I finished blowing off the chaff and set the beans in a jar to cool.

Just plain old Maxwell house but I cold brew it to bring out the best flavour. After I cold brew it I add the hot water and make the perfect cup of coffee. I have even skipped the water and blended together a cold mug of milk and ice with cold coffee for a good summer drink.

Damn, Kali, into coffee, are you ?!?!?!*LOL* SOUNDS GOOD, TOO!
I usually make a pot of coffee in the morning with 2 rounded scoops of Maxwell House or Folger's and 1 heaping scoop of a premium, "flavored" coffee like Chocolate Caramel Brownie, Foglifter, etc. I like to get the "idea" of the flavor, not a mouthful of something that tastes NOTHING like coffee. When I don't use "flavored" coffee I like very strong, very dark coffee, then I make it very sweet and give it a beautiful tan!(Same way I like my women: Very sweet, very hot, with a beautiful tan!) [:)]

    Blech!! [xx(] [xx(] [xx(]

I hate coffee. I hate the way it smells and the way it tastes, although for some reason I do enjoy coffee ice cream.

What gets me going in the morning is, sad to say, a can of pop. Has enough caffeine to wake me up and it is just as bad for my teeth as coffee is for yours.

But, my breath is a bit better.

I've never been an avid coffee drinker but I do remember a few times while riding around on aircraft carriers and submarines that when you really need a pick me up after being forward deployed for several days only to find out you were leaving again in another 6-10 hrs. all you had to do was visit the mess hall and ask for some JP-5 coffee and the MSs would hook you up with something that tasted like raw molasses but worked like amphetamines!

Maybe one of these days I'll try some gourmet stuff and like it but the above is all I really know about coffee.

Community dark roast. I check the strength with a 12 ga. shell--if it don't float, I don't drink it. I also like "cajun" coffee with chickory.

We usually buy 8 o'clock beans and then ground them when we make the coffee. Much better than buying it already ground. Also like the coffee at Dunkin Donuts.[:p][:p]

    Anything Dark and Rich

Usually Maxwell House Masterblend. Sometimes we get the Hi-dollar stuff that you grind yourself. I like them like I like my cigars, dark, rich, full-bodied.

[:D] Funny that you should say that; as I matter of fact I did. In high school I went to Costa Rica as an exchange student where I was introduced to truly great fresh coffee. College took me down to the land of communism, illegal aliens and gun-fearing liberals, and somehow I ended up staying though that was never part of the original plan. I've since returned to Costa Rica for vacation, toured coffee plantations and narrowed it down to exactly what I like best.

    yawarakai:
I agree that cold brewing can really work wonders. I can't believe how little bitterness comes through, and I love using that technique for chilled coffee drinks like you mention.

    All,
If you want to try home roasting, I say go for it. It's really easy.

    1. Get unroasted beans
    2. Pre-heat oven to 500deg
    3. Spread beans into shallow roasting pan or cookie sheet (1 layer deep)
    4. Put in oven and watch closely. Around 6-8 minutes you'll see the color start to change and hear quiet popping.
    5. Watch closely, stir as needed to obtain even roast.
    6. Roast until desired color is obtained, or slightly before desired color is obtained as they continue to roast while you take them from oven. I usually roast for about 11minutes.
    7. Remove from oven and get them outside ASAP. The beans release an unpleasant oily smokes as soon as the cooler air hits them and if you stay inside you will stink up your house and set off smoke detectors.
    8. Dump the bean into the collander and stir them to help cool and seperate chaff
    9. Store in unlocked/unsealed vacuum jar overnight (the beans release C02 for 12hrs or so, so don't seal them yet

Although this isn't necessary, I like to pour the beans from one collander to another while near a fan. Pouring the beans through the airstream from the fan blows away the light chaff and lets only the beans fall into the recieving container. This also helps cool the beans, as they continue to roast until they cool down.

Keep in mind the longer you roast them and the darker they get, the less caffeine they will have and the roaster/stronger the flavor. I used to be a huge dark roast fan (the darker the better), until I tried really good light roasts and realized how much of the flavor gets burned away and overpowered by the excessive roast.

    Good luck!

If you want to learn more, go here:
    http://www.ineedcoffee.com/

You can also roast with certain types of popcorn poppers, cast iron skillets on a gas stove top, get fancy roasting pans for the oven, by fancy coffee roasters or even build an attachment to roast using a rotisserie on your BBQ grill. The oven works great for me and does enough for me to stay in good coffee for about a week (the flavor is noticeably more store-like and bitter after 6-8 days anyway).
