ok I posted a feew months ago about my dads 4 wheeler not havinng a spark with the help of you guys we found out that we had a short in the kill switch and that fixed the spark problem but after fixing that we could only get it to run by pouring a little gas inn the carb.
then it would die/
anyone got any ideals what may be wrong with it.
we replaced the fuel filter but it acts like its not getting any gas
also its been sittinng snice last summer because we just not got around to working on it.

thanks

I agree on the needle valve problem, and also may need the float level checked. I have also seen bad floats.

tazzer sometimes if they are hollow you can shake them and hear the gas sloshing inside. (the float itself that is)

Look for damage from water in the bowl freezing and crushing the float. Also, with it removed, submerse it in some gasoline (don't use water because the surface tention of water is different than gasoline) and see is any leaks are found. If it doesn't float well, or leaks, it will cause problems. If it's distorted from freeze damage, it will sometimes hang and not function freely. Rare, but it does happen and is worth checking while you have it appart.

Also, clean out the cylinder of the needle valve, not just the needle rod alone.

Also, if it's the type with a diaphram in the top, take it out and look for any small holes or cracks in the rubber. If the diaphram is bad, all kind of funny things happen.

You didn't soak it with the float still installed did you? Some of the floats have a pin-hole on the top side. Also, depending on what you soaked it in, plastic doesn't like caustic chemicals. If you soaked it long enough, the seam in the float could have opened allowing it fill up.

Edit: Just re-read the OP. That tube on the bottom of the bowl may not be the overflow tube for the bowl, it may be the water trap. In which case it should be have a drain hose attached and sealed

Taz - take the bottom off the fuel cut-off valve on the tank. It has a screen in it that is probably clogged with rust and other crap. You may have to clean it several times if it has been setting up for a while. My 300 fourtrax did exactly what you are describing after it set for a year. fuel would knind of drip through it, so if it set for a few minutes, it had enough to start and run for a few seconds, then die. good luck....

Tx's I took that off the other day it looked junked up so i cleaned
but if i did not clean it good enough would gas still empty out of the line when its disc. from the carb, I drained all the gas from the tank into a gas can with no flow problems ??????

Taz - i actually had two similar problems associated with mine. First was what i described with the screen. Also the bowl itself (the part you screw off) gets clogged. For some reason gas would flow through it when the gas line was disconnected, but when you cranked it, it would starve out after you rode it about 100 yards. Once i got it all cleaned out (tank and all) i still had to clean the screen and the orifice out twice more. make sure you switch the valve from on to reserve and back and clean both sides. If that isn't it, i'm lost and maybe some of these real mechanics can help you....

    Clay,

If the tank is rusty, take it off, buy a bag of fish tank gravel, pour it into the tank with a little watter and dishwashing liquid, then shake, and shake and shake the thing untill the tank is clean and shiney.

Rather than go through all of the shaking, I used to jack up the back of the tractor, bungie strap it to the drive wheel, fire up the tractor and let it tumble away.

Man, in about 30 minutes, it looks like a new tank inside![;)]
