SKS education...

I have had an old sks, folding stock, 37rd mag, sitting around for quite awhile, and just now getting around to messing with it much. Always found it a pita to mess with getting the mag back in, and am just now hearing of "stripper clips", and being told the mag was never meant to be removed..? So, I guess I'll be getting some of these stripper clips, and maybe an sks loader.

(1) Is the loader all that necessary?

(2) Are there conversions available that make getting the mag back in easier, or are the stripper clips the best way of reloading?

(3) Recommended ammo brand for plinking..?

After tinkering a little, I have no problem with my yugo-sks useing 30rd removable mags.

As for ammo, mine loves that cheap wolf ammo. I'm hitting everything within 5in at 200yds with open sights. Would be better if I had a bench rest, but I just use my arm as a rest.

Get an AK...that will be the very best solution to your problem.

I heard there is a "trick" that involves taking the firing pin out and putting it in backwards in some models of the SKS though.

Never tried it...not planning on it...just wondered if it worked...I guess it does. You hear a ton of things from time to time...and just wonder what is and isn't true. I really don't EVER mess with the internal working of any firearm...or do I ever alter how a gun is made...just stirring a pot...I guess.

thats good in a way, designers spent all that money and time to have a gun work a certain way, meaning the gun will work best that way. Modifying it can have ill effects,(wait dont flip), but doing some things doesn't hurt one bit.

Yes, stripper clips are the best and fastest way to reload an SKS.
Put the box magzine back on and buy stripper clips.

I'm fairly certain I "comprehend". Given your reply just appears as more sarcasim, not sure I can say the same for you.

I say ditch the detachable mag and put the standard 10rd mag back on. Or go look up King Joey on that Neo Jedi site of his (inside joke sorry). KJ found a way to mill the bolt so mag changes wouldn't require 3 hands when using USA brand mags.

Everything you need to know about SKS's is availble here...
    http://www.surplusrifle.com/

Or do a search on this board for SKS, you will probably find 3000 threads.

Now what's this firing pin trick? Never heard of it.

As Drobs mentioned, post this question over at http://darklordofconservatism.com/phpBB2/index.php in the Tech forum and we'll discuss it. I'll take some pics of how to mill the bolt.
