I have never had it happen, but it is entirely possible for a diesel to run backwardson the old mechanical pump systems (not sure if it could happen on the newer electronic models).

Your intake and exaust just swap rolls when this happens.

I have heard of plenty of stories of this happening but just never have witnessed it myself.

YEPPERS! Starts off with several big smoke rings, then drives backwards in all 13 gears!

Gunnut, is it still possible with the new electronic pump setups?

It seems to me that the electronics would not allow it. But I'm not sure.

Like I stated though I know it is possible with the manual pumps.

I had a IH 444 run backward. Dead giveaway when smoke comes out of the air filter!

A little different story then you diesel guys but a friend of mine years ago was hill climbing with a 2 stroke dirt bike and the bike died half way up the hill. He started rolling backwards down the hill and the bike started in reverse revolution.

Not all. A 4stroke diesel will run backwards just as easy!

Like I said all it does is reverse the rolls of the intake and exaust.
