Some of you might remember a few months back my post about giving up athletic sports even though Im only 34 years old. I caught a good deal of flak. There was a lot of talk about "quit your whining, get the surgery you'll be fine!"
Well I got the surgery yesterday. I have damaged my miniscus(sp) So badly doc says I am going to have to have it replaced in six months to a year. So it looks like my knee problems arent going to be going away anytime soon. Its discouraging as heck. And in the mean time I still cant get around like I need to. Sorry for being such a downer, but I had to vent.

Sorry to hear of the prognosis. Like you, my physical activity was reduced by an injury.

You'll find things you can do that play away from your injury.

    Good luck.

Been there done that. And have a knee replacement as a souvenir.

i fill for you, heard the same thing about a total knee replacement in six months to a year from my doc some 10 years ago after he performs my 4th orthiscopic on my right knee.. have not had to yet, but my knee blows you like a balloon and has for 10 years, if i try to climb 4 flights of stairs... water sking is a big no no, tried once couldn't walk for a week!!!!!!!nothing but road hunting because if i try to hike more than 200-300 hundred yards. it blows up so much that i've had to have my pants cut off. sorry to say this but i hope for you that you do get it replaced in 6-12 months so you can go back to enjoying life. they won't do mine until i need it.

Really feel for you. My Knees never have been in that great of shape. Then last year I went out on my HD and hit a deer. Right knee took the full impact. It was May last year. Now I'm back to about 80% but from time to time it just blows up and the pain kills me.

Have not went to a Doc to have it fixed just to get pain meds right after it 1st happened. had too many surgeries over the last 2 years. Triple By-pass and both wrists for Carpel Tunnel. Cannot afford to miss any more work for a while.

But in 1979 while on Okinawa right knee started hurting me. Went in to see the Docs they told me with out surgery to fix my Knee I would not be walking in 5 years. Proved them wrong made it 15 years while still in the Marines. Have taken it a little bit easier on my Knees since but still no Surgery.

Will get the surgery when I retire[:D]

Like Alpine, been there done that.

Yes, slowed me down some but didn't stop me. Doctor informed me that I'd be having total knee replacment surgery within 10 years, that was 21 years ago. Got good days and got bad days but doubt they'll do a replacement on me anytime soon.

When you end up with other aches and pains that are worse than the knee, you'll look at a bad knee as a fairly minor inconvenience. Having another go around with diverticulitus and awaiting shoulder surgery.

Hang in there, it isn't as bad as it could be. Look around you and see all the other olks in far worse shape than you and be thankful for what you do have.

Well, at least, now you know. Sorry to hear it.

There are times when injuries or conditions force "some" of us to limit our activities.
Unlike "others" who are supermen, or women.

I ignored a back injury for decades. It caught up with me. I had one HECK of a good time while I could, but I will NOT be skiing any moguls, double black diamonds, or doing any cliff jumping anymore. [V]

I tore my ACL (a ligament in the knee) Never have walked right since. Some folks come back pretty strong from the ortho surgery. You might be allright.

I broke my right thigh bone in the knee joint a year ago. Was pinned under a big pine tree for a half hour.
Had surgery, got 4 titanium screws in the knee, was in the hospital for a week.
Doc said I would be back working construction by Christmas.
I did two hours of interior painting today and had to come home and lie down with the leg elevated for an hour to get some relief, the knee hurt so badly, the tissue around the knee feels tight and it burns and hurts, and the knee swells up.
Walking down a flight of stairs is still difficult.
I am still seeing a phsical therapist and doing the exercises every day, but, I am getting doubtful about ever making a full recovery.
As for right now, for doing construction work, I am disabled.
The condition of my knee just depresses the hell out of me.

I hope your knee problems turn out better than mine, good luck!

I blew out my right ACL in high school. Really bad -- nerve damage. A year later I broke my right femur at the knee and lost part of my left patella and tendon in a car crash. Kept me out of the Navy. And the Air Force. And the Army. And the Coast Guard. (I didn't try the Marines.)

Over a quarter-century later I'm still hobbling along. Sometimes my left knee buckles and I fall down, which is embarrassing.

    Good luck.

Prayers sent. I'm sorry for the depth of the injury, for the pain you're going through, for the other surgeries you will have to endure and for the life style changes of giving up the things you love. I pray nothing but the best for you and I pray that things improve soon.

It took me about a year to get over the replacement surgery. BUT after that year it was well worth it. I was just like you, I could walk about 1/4 mile and then I was toast. Doc told me the knee would last about 15 years. Well my 15 are up this year but it shows no signs of wearing out.

Sorry to hear that '38. Make sure you get extra opinions from top med facilities. There are some new resurfacing technologies that are as good or better than replacement. See below for more info.

Sorry to hear that. I played hard for 40 years and knew i had torn meniscus, but back then that was some major work on the knee. Have been ok, until a few years ago. Stepped on a rock on a mule deer hunt in CO and crashed big time. Just kept getting worse, until it started waking me up. Doc told me some quick surgery and 3-4 days on crutches and in a month i wouldn't know i had any problems....

Well when i woke up 4 hours later, the first thing they told me was - "you know that things about a coulpe of days on crutches - that's now gonna be 6+ weeks".... Had some dead bone on the femur that had to be fractured on one side and holes drilled into it on the other side - to hopefully stimulate some bone regrowth. The bone was crumbling. Just got off cruthces about 3 weeks ago and had to re-learn to walk. Hurts, but not like before and i have to ice it down about 5 times a day or it swells up so big it makes my foot swell up so much i can't wear shoes. AND the jury is still out on the bone regrowth. I hope you can look at it like i have been trying to look at it - whatever time it takes to get me back in the field is small compared to not being in the field.

    Hang in there Pard....

Thanks for the feedback guys. I knew I was not alone. I keep telling myself there are things far worse. I mean its discouraging right now but I'm sure I'll get through this. At least theres an otherwise healthy leg there to fix. I really feel for the people struggling with amputation and paralysis. I cant imagine the hopless feel that goes along with knowing that it isn't going to get any better.

Awww geeez. I'm 40 and I'm having my knee scoped next month. I've not been able to participate in the sports that I love for close to four years.

    Now I'm worried.

    Best of luck to you.
