EASTON, Md. (June 11, 2002 3:50 p.m. EDT) - A pellet gun that closely resembles a 9mm Beretta handgun carried by police was taken off the shelves of a Wal-Mart store after officers stopped two teens carrying the weapons, police said.
The Powerline pellet gun, which sold for $17.88, even has similar serial numbers on its side, said Easton Police Chief George Harvey.
"It is getting too close to reality when you see something like this," Harvey said, holding up the pellet gun next to his Beretta. "They look exactly the same."
Police were called to an Easton business after two teenagers were spotted with the pellet guns. The officers discovered the guns after frisking the pair, Harvey said.
"When you feel a gun like that on someone, the entire situation changes rather quickly," Harvey said.
The teens were charged with carrying or wearing a dangerous or deadly weapon, said Sgt. Mark Hrobar.
While Wal-Mart officials have told police all of the guns have been removed for the store's shelves, police are not sure how many of the pellet guns were sold, Harvey said.
"These (pellet) guns have been on the shelves for about seven or eight months," Harvey said.
Jessica Eldred, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman at the company's headquarters in Little Rock, Ark., said the company does not plan to pull the pellet gun from shelves nationwide. Wal-Mart, however, has made its supplier aware of the concerns, and the supplier is working on the issue.
The spokeswoman stressed that the pellet gun is a weapon and not a toy, and noted that Wal-Mart policy prohibits selling the gun to anyone under 18.
State law does not set any age limits on the sale of pellet guns. However, Talbot County is one of several counties statewide that have provisions making it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to carry or display a dangerous weapon, Hrobar said.
