but can you tell me what ball means?

    Full metal jacketed bullet. Ball for short.

    It orginated in olden days i.e. cap and ball. Just a term denoting a plain projectile (not Minie, not shot). A plain round nose lead bullet out of an old revolver would be considered ball. In the 19th century, the British developed large caliber flat nose bullets in India and they came to be called "Dum Dum" bullets.
    As Nunn pointed out, nowadays most people only know them as FMJ projectiles.

    the definition of ball ammo is "standard military ammo" with the others being specialty. The origin being when round balls were the standard ammo.

    When in the Military, case containers of .45 ACP would be marked "BALL" in the nomenclature.. Much of the 30 cal carbine ammo was "Ball, enless it was a specialty round..

    And as stated in todays teminology FMJ refers to Ball Ammo
