cheapest rounds for long range shooting

.223 rounds have been jumping up in price lately and i was just wondering what is the most economical rifle to shoot @ around 500 meters. .223 may still be the best price, but what are some other options and where do i buy the rounds for them. sportsmansguide.com? Thanks for your input.

7.62x54R, and 8mm Mauser. Milsurp. Get it while it's out there cheap. It won't be there forever. Us old poops can remember oceans of Milsurp .303 Brit, 30 carbine, and 30-06. And we were sure that there was no bottom to that ocean. You youngsters remember dirt cheap 7.62x39.

Oops, I just checked, classic still has the Swiss rifles but is out of ammo. Just three days ago they had cases of the stuff.
