Shrug, this isn't any big deal, really.

Allies are usually there as a matter of convenience, nothing more. Pakistan's convenience was money. When you boil it all down, money is the key reason why most alliances are formed. Many nations do it purely for trade reasons. Others do it so that they don't have to dump gobs of money into defense -- sign a treaty and have another country (USA) provide for your defense.

So we have paid Pakistan millions, and we threatened to bomb them back to the stone age if they didn't play ball.
Is Pakistan part of the "coalition of the willing" that Bush keeps talking about?

So far, the only ones saying that we threatened to bomb them to the Stone Age is Pakistan. Armitage, who BTW was the Valerie Plame leaker, who never really liked GWB, and who was the one who allegedly stated that we would bomb them to the Stone Age has denied saying it. But, never let it be said that you don't give the USA the benefit of the doubt. When in doubt, always side with the Blame America First crowd.

Pretty much all of our so-called allies are in it for the money. They are not so much allies are they are groupies; happy to hang around as long as times are good but nowhere to be found when things are bad.

If I remember correctly we forgave an $8 billion debt owed to us by Egypt in exchange for their sending forces to the Gulf War. I believe that we are also paying a tidy sum to the former Soviet republics which border Afganistan for the use of bases inside those countries.

and another reason, probably just as important as the money and avoiding getting bombed, is that (as they said the other day) they would much rather cooperate and send their own troops to conduct operations than have US troops traipsing all around inside their borders and raising hell.

I saw an interview with Armitage. He denied making the "back to the stone age remark."
Rather,Armitage said he told the Pakistan representative, "You are either with us or against us." He told the Pakistani delegate that the US had a list of demands that Pakistan must comply with, and they were not negotiable.
So you see, spanielsells, even if the "stone age" remark was not uttered, the US was putting intense pressure on Pakistan, and the threat of military force was implied.
Hence, Armitage himself would understand my use of sarcasm in calling Pakistan a member of the "coalition of the willing".

I don't see a problem with buying an ally...as long as they stay bought. This little deal with the Taliban pisses me off.[:(!]
