Are there any parts that should be bought from certain chains, or from the dealer in your opinion?? I needed a thermostat for my 5.9 cummins and just went down to O'Reilly and picked one up...Are there places to avoid???

I have not been able to buy a GOOD aftermarket thermostat for 20 years. Dealer only part for me. O'Riellys might have a factory 'stat for your Comealong. They sell Motorcraft for Fords. Look on their website and see if they offer it. The counter help will ALWAYS offer up their cheapest junk. I always tell them "the best you got".

I too have been more, and more shopping at Rock Auto. For years I shopped at the local Carquest store. They gave me great prices as I was loosely associated with a local repair shop. Then Advanced Auto bought them out, and my great prices went bye bye. Started using NAPA more, but there are a bunch of young guys in there who are disorganized, and generally don't know squat. They pizzed me off last October, and I haven't been back. Also been 10-11 months since I darkened Carquest's door.

I been leaning on Rock Auto more, and more. I generally get orders from RA in 3-4 days. What I have to have right away, I been getting at O'riellys. But when Rock Auto is 40%-50%-60% cheaper than local......there's no excuse for that.

In my area O'reilly's is much better than the other chains. The employees seem much better trained. I'm not gonna ask them or anyone else at an auto parts store to diagnose my car though. They are there to sell parts. I watched a parts dude reading codes in a car a couple of days ago. He told the owner he needed some kind of sensor and I was thinking maybe but probably not. Codes are just a starting point. When I was turning wrenches I did a lot of driveability work and very often the problem would be in a connector to the module or sensor or something else beside that mod or sensor.

I have been buying on line from rockauto wide selection and price range you pick out what brand and less expensive then the local parts store . if you have a couple days to wait on parts but they come right to your house another good thing
and my son returned some parts that were packaged / labeled from the supplier wrong and had no problem with returns on them

as for parts I look at price but also go with how hard is it to change and go with OEM as much as possible to lessen the repair agin down the road if easy to change and not a critical part I may go with a less expensive part

Federated Auto Parts if you have one in your area. If they don't have it in stock they can have it for me by the next afternoon.

For a thermostat, I'd go factory. Only because the price couldn't be that much higher. Brakes, rotors, tie rod ends, ball joints, shocks, I go parts store. I recently bought a power steering pump and pressure side hose from Rock Auto. I got middle-of-the-road pricewise. Two weeks later it's whining. Factory pump is $300. R/A will let me send it back for the same pump. Right now I'm going to let it whine till I make up my mind. I may go to a local yard for one then buy a re-build kit for the one that's in there and have a back-up waiting. The re-build kits are less than 20. Honda P/S fluid is about $4.50 a 12oz bottle. so far I've used a case plus some.

Well I just did some shopping and was totally shocked. I bought 2 hydraulic hood supports at $26.99 each, and a thermostat at O'Reillys for $25, so about $80. Just checked out Rockauto, and purchased an OEM thermostat, and 2 hood supports that were made in America, and with expedited shipping $49....Thanks Karl..

Oreilly's give a military discount, I don' think any of the other chains do. 10% at least covers the local/state tax.
