Don't forget to support this years Kettle Campaign.

83% of funds recieved go directly to service the needy.
The Salvation Army can be described with one word. "Others."

That's a little surprising since the Salvation Army is a Christian Church. I guess they have their reasons. [?]

I would have done the same thing, not reconizing Jesus as the reason for the season means that you are just out for the money, I just hope it was just that one person and not a new policy.

    That is sad to hear.
I have always given to them, as they seem to perform far better than the Red Cross, in the situations where they are needed.
I guess they have become PC also.
I will wait and see what they do around "these here parts".

SA is probably the best charity out there, they give more back to the communities they serve than any other.
I thought all the bell ringers were volunteers?

I believe you are correct Don.
Edit,......I am calling them tomorrow, and finding out if this is a new PC policy, or just some nitwit, that chose to express their own feelings.

    Not the bell-ringers fault.
He/she likely didn't know what you were getting at...

You all (rcrxmike included) have your panties too much in a bunch over this "Happy Holidays" thing, IMHO....

Why don't you just go back and ask if it bothers you so much, instead of griping here?

The response was (as you posted) "I said happy holidays.."
Doesn't say whether they have been told they have to say "Happy Holidays," doesn't imply perhaps they didn't hear or understand you....
Perhaps this was a mentally limited or indigent person, who often are volunteers at this time of year.

I could give a rat's fat patooie if someone says either. I was raised Catholic, and I live with and love a man who was raised as a Fundamentalist.
I have no problem with Jesus. Whether I believe he was the savior is irrelivant, even though I don't, I still put up a manger in my house every Christmas. And yes, I call it Christmas. However, I worked for many years in a jewelry store with a wonderful woman of the Jewish persuasion, who would gently remind me, after I had closed out a sale and wished the purchaser "Merry Christmas," that the purchaser was Jewish. Ya sometimes just can't tell by looking at them. It became habit.
Don't get snotty with me, sir...you asked for comments, and you got mine. Lesson learned: don't ask for comments unless you want to hear them all.

Is that the christian way? To not donate money to the needy because of some semantics. If you want it to represent your faith then do what your fath would have you do, turn the other cheek and help the needy..

Not at all, just my own feeling about and experience with the "Merry Christmas" vs. "Happy Holidays" debate.

it doesn't bother me at all for i don't judge a person by a name in which he calls god, only that he has a giving spirit and will contribute to helping others no matter what a persons religion is. by using the term "happy holidays" they are trying not to offend those celibrating hannuka. i just say merry christmas give them some bucks and be on my way[;)][:D]

The Salvation Army is the only charity I give cash to.
Good Will and several church charities get material goods donations.
I've yet to hear a bad word about the S.A..
Our gun club is soliciting volunteers.

I will put 20 dollars in the Salvation Army kettle tomorrow, and see how they respond. If they say "Happy Holidays", I'll respond with "Merry Christmas."

It's not about the bell ringer (which has got to be a terrible job, whether they're paid or a volunteer) it's about helping the Salvation Army. They do good work and deserve as much help as possible -- all year long.

I put money in the kettle today. The ringer said "thank you" I said "thank you for doing this".
I, a few years, rang the bell in front of Targets until they stopped it a few years ago. I had a friend that was Captain in the SA at the time. His family and friends made many sacrifices to help others. I attended the Church very simple and it provided food and comfort for many.
If you do not want to give, don't. But please, do not give a trivial happening as an excuse.

JWB,.......I spoke to them earlier today.
Was told that they have no standard "script" so to speak, for the bellringers to follow.
They are free to respond however they wish, but was assured that in NO way, do they have any policy against saying Merry Christmas, and never will.

Don't you all find that there are some uncharitable opinions expressed in this thread ??

    They are all volunteers.

The Salvation Army, as a group, hold the highest ideals and standards that any charity possibly could, in my experience.

I agree Doug,.......I just wanted to find out if they had capitulated to the PC morons or not.
I have given to the Salvation Army for many years, and not just through the bellringers pots.

I am sorry if that came off as an accusation. I don't know where or how you donate. My point I simply, you originally felt the Salvation Army did enough good to give them a hard earned dollar. Then you figured happy holidays was so offensive that it change your opinion of the organization? It seems ridiculous to me.. <shrug>

I am personally not a religious person; I will give money to a organization that does good things despite their religious focus. As long as I feel they do good in the community.

I hope no offense was taken,

Actually, Jesus ISN'T the reason for the season. People were giving gifts on December 25 long before Jesus was born. It was called "Saturnalia", it was the Roman holiday celebrating the god Saturn. And the pagans of Northern Europe would celebrate "Yule" and the winter solstice. Christianity just adopted these holidays (including their customs) and called it "Christmas." Jesus wasn't even BORN in December. So the "reason for the season" is actually a bunch of pagan holidays.

And if you have a Christmas tree in your house, that is a pagan symbol adopted from the pre-Christian Yule celebration! Ditto with misseltoe, holly, the Yule log and many other "Christmas" traditions. They all came from pagan winter holidays. So when the SA bellringer says "Happy Holidays", he means Saturnalia, Yule and the Winter Solstice.
