VW ads: Do they bother you?

MSNBC has a story <http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12694352/> about the new VW Jetta ads showing crashes and touting Jetta safety. The story says the ads are breaking TV taboos. Is anyone shocked or bothered by these ads? Good gosh, after viewing ads showing every other thing imaginable, I guess I'm not shocked by an ad touting safe vehicles. Are you? And what types of ads DO shock or offend you?

Shocked, but I wouldn't say in a negative fashion. The one that sticks with me shows a truck running into the driver's door. I jumped out of my chair the first time I saw it, having been in two accidents that involved that type of collision. The point of advertisement is to catch someone's attention, and I can definitely say that they got mine.

I like the new ads, they have that curiously German humor. Reminds me of the Saurday Night Live skit called Sprocketts..

"I am Dieter, and now is the time on GB when we dance...."

Not shocked by much, but annoyed by a lot of them. The Vonage ads with the Woo Woo in the background will keep me from ever using Vonage, even if they are the only cell phone out there.

No. But what did bother me was when they used the GTO song sung in German for their pathetic GTI. Very wishful thinking on their part.

Nothing shocks me and only small minds and evil people offend me.
That does neither.

The interesting part is considering the magnitude of the crashes, how little damage is done to either vehicle. Does appear to be somewhat staged.

Love the ads and the cars. If I drove anything besides my truck it would be a VW Jetta.

What kind of idiot would be bothered by a t.v. commercial? I guess obviously they write for msnbc, if I were to answer my own question.

Amen Brother! That one really annoys me. I'd never use Vonage because of the commercial.

For my wife, it's the SciFi channel commercial where the guy is blowing into the dog's butt, and the dog blows up like a balloon. She absolutely HATES that one!

The VW ads are annoying, but not as bad as those dammed Geico ads. If I see another caveman or gekko ad, I'm gonna puke. In fact, most all the ads out there pizz me off.[:p]

I love the GTI ads, they put ricers in their rightful place.

guy engineer-"its a 98 vhatchamacallit"
girl engineer- "you get an F"

"you know vhat time it is, time to unpimp ze auto"

I like the European Ford commercial where the car eats the cat.

FWIW, I think the Jetta ads are pretty neat. I like them a lot better than the "VeeDubb" short-lived ad campaign where they unpimped people's rides. That was dumb.

It really isn't anything different from the movies. What's funny, however, is that one of the crash ads shows government star ratings. I think the front-end star rating for a Jetta is 4 -- not that impressive to be bragging about when there are plenty of 5-star cars out there in the same price range. VW stopped the front-end crash shortly thereafter and went to the side-impact commercials, because they could brag about a 5-star side-impact rating.

I have never been shocked by anything in any commercial. Some are in bad taste, ie tampon and std ads, but none are ground breaking or shocking imho.

Oh I hated those. The best Quiznos commercials were from the "Unfair Advantage" campaign, which just preceeded the monkey/mouse singing ones.

To be fair, the "Unfair Advantage" campaign was much funnier on the radio than on TV, which is why it may have ended.

The VW commercials are much better than the Mazda zoom zoom ads[xx(] which are very annoying. I bought my youngest daughter a Jetta because I think it is a safe car, it is a good value for the money and since her drive back and forth to high school is all of about ten minutes it is all the car she needs.

That ad is nothing compared to some of the ads we get..

Imagine this....

You see an extreme closeup of a boy with a few little red dots on his face - screaming and crying. That goes on for 3 seconds.

Then the angle gets wider and the kid moves away from you - you see more and more.

You see he's strapped into a kids carseat.
Now there are shards of glass covering his clothes - still he's crying and screaming like you never want to hear in your life.

As the camera moves out - you see the sides of each front seat.. at first it doesn't seem that there are anyone in those seats.
Still the kid is screaming heartbreakingly..

At last, you see the parent - covered in blood - motionless, head out the window or where the window used to be - it's shattered and that's what also covered the kid.
The parent is motionless - kid still screaming and calling out for the parent.

As you get the whole picture, you realize the parent is killed in a carcrash - the kid survived, hurt, seems alone and no help is there.

It holds like that for quite a few seconds...

Then.... "Remember your seatbelt - it saves lives."

I don't think that's over the top - I've seen worse.
