Listening to a gun snob....very frustrating

I was in a place...pretty much minding my own business waiting and in the background I hear a conversation. One guy is "helping" another guy and the guy that is giving his opinion sounds like he thinks he is some kind of gift to the world. Nothing he said was in a kind or helpful tone.....just spouting off info like the clouds should part above his head and angels should sing in the background (ever so lightly so they don't dare drown out what he has to say.)

These people frustrate me beyond all reason. Its nice to help people and I think anyone that has help to give people should appreciate it. I can't tell you how many of these types I personally know. When we are having a conversation they are normal....you would never guess that they had another "side" but I have seen the switch flip and the gun snob emerge. So sad....

Usually any gunstore with more than a couple of people will have an "expert" hanging around. Sometimes they actually know what they are talking about.

And sometimes those "know it alls" wear postal cloths, have too strong of relationship with their mom, and answer to the name "Cliff".

Neither of these worked in a gun store....just one guy that was looking for info and another that was giving it.

Based on my personal experiences in most Gun Shops, the folks behind the counter are not particularly friendly or out going. I can imagine how intimidating those places are for first time gun buyers that have very little knowledge or experience. I frequent a couple Gun Stores that do an excellent job being approachable, but the majority I've been into are snobby and aloof.

More often than not in a retail situation involving the sale of firearms to the uninformed. The seller tries to motivate the buyer to purchase what the seller feels is in his best interests. Very often a informed outsider will chime in and give a second opinion that can help a buyer buy for their reasons not the sellers reasons...

I don't do any advising at a gun store on a deal unless the owner of the store asks. I like to see my local dealer profit from customers.

I hope this isn't a "hijack" but I have a hard time keeping my mouth shut at Lowe's or Home Depot. I hear do it yourselfers ask pretty basic questions and get some crazy answers....

I got in the middle of a sale at the Walmart sporting goods counter one day, and helped the clerk make multiple sales.

The customer was trying to buy a fly rod for a gift. The clerk helped her find one, and was about to conclude the sale. So, I stuck my nose in, and suggested that the lady might also like a reel. Walmart only had two to choose from, so I helped the lady pick out one. The clerk was then ready to ring the sale up, but I suggested that the customer might like some fly line. The clerk found some fly line and the customer selected a package. The customer ended up buying three items instead of one.

I should have gotten a commission on the sale, I reckon.

That is so cool...and very sweet of you. I wish there were more helpful people out there like you (and others here on the forums.) This guy I was overhearing sounded like a real *. He wasn't being nice at all. Every time the guy he was helping asked anything or said a word the * would interrupt him, breathe out like HE was frustrated and act even worse....it wasn't good.

and that is when they come to my store and we help them hook up the stuff they bought at Home Depot/Lowes since I forgot more about plumbing than the big box store's staff knows.[:)]

unfortunately, from my experience, the guys who are regulars at gun stores, WHO ACTUALLY SHOOT A LOT, are far more experienced than the employees. I see gun store employees all the time, who THINK since they work at a gun store, actually KNOW what they are talking about.

If I see an employee giving a customer BS advise, I wait, and then tell them (after the idiot is waiting on someone else) just exactly what they need to know, or to the best of my ability. Just because you work there, doesn't mean you know anything.

I have seen guys tell customers that the CIA carry KARH arms pistols or even rugers[V] IMHO, you should have to pass a test to be able to sell guns to the public. Many folks are FIRST TIME buyers, and don't need dimwits giving them their UNEDUCATED advice.

Hell, many STORE OWNERS I have met don't have a clue[8] The best was when our local gunshop hired a "new guy" who was "all that" (according to him) and he was telling the customer that this particular rifle was a "sniper rifle". After listening to enough of his BS, I asked him how accurate it was[;)] he stated this and that, and I stated that I had a rifle in the truck that would walk the dog on his choice.[}:)] We went out back to the range, and he got HANDED HIS * on the firing line by a BONE STOCK hunting rifle and my handloads. Needless to say,..he wasn't around long.

If you don't know what you are talking about,...just sell the products and don't offer to be a voice of wisdom[V] Gander Mountain Hates me for this[8D]

I think she figured the gift recipient would pick out his own flies.

About five years ago I was at sportmans Warehouse. This guy wanted a pump shotgun. The clerk showed him an 870. The guy asked to see the Nova. Now both shotguns were 12 ga. shotguns. The clerk told the guy that the 870 was more powerful. I busted out laughing, and so did a few other guys. The guy stopped talking to the clerk and started questioning the guys around him.I don't know what he ended up with.
