recanning??

Has anyone bought the big cans (like a gallon size) of beans, barbeque sauce, ravioli or whatever and recanned it into pint size jars?

Good idea if it would work. We can get those size cans at a overstock place for $2.99 usually. Corn, green beans, etc. sometimes Nalleys chili or baked beans.

I don't think you are supposed to store away food that way.....it sounds "unsafe" to me. And.....that is a LOT of time and effort just to save a dollar. Those things you are talking about only cost a little to begin....I wouldn't bother.

Check the economics of what you are doing. Price of jar lids (they are not cheap) price of gas or electric to run thru the canning cycle (figure about 45 minutes to an hour of having heat on) as well as washing jars, time, etc.

In addition- that food has already been cooked once- when it was canned the first time. Should be REAL well done on the second go round.

We can home grown green beans. It is cheaper to buy cans on sale. We do it not for the price, but because we like our own.

We can all our own vegetables, but the store we go to also have the big cans of nacho cheese sauce for $4, wonder about that, That would be a he77 of a savings on something like that. Same with the Famous Daves barbeque sauce.

Re-canning cheese.....wow...could that be a mistake with MAJOR consequenses. I think you should do it....and keep us posted on how that turns out....[:D]
