and 5 ton had the strangest transmission shifting pattern of any thing I have ever driven. Our trucks were Post WW II but not very many years post. some as early as 1947. They had a 2 speed transfer that shifter was set horizontal facing forward between the seats. and the five speed Transmission. I grew up as a drag racer it was really fun starting transfer in low range and power shifting with right foot petal on the floor going the fist 3 gears before shifting Thansfer up and transmission down at same time back to second and then starting the up shifting the transmission up til you reached 5th and the darn 4th to 5th pattern was UP over to the right and then back down. Must have been engineered by a FRENCHMAN that had worked for CINTRON[}:)]
Both sticks ahead and the red light on. Randy is probably the only one on here who understands that expression. [^]

There is a ton of slang that truckers used in the old days and yes, I've driven a Mack with a set of sticks.
Here's a few more terms that come to mind.
Double breasted Yamaha=2 stroke Detroit Silver 92's
West Coast Rocker= Long wheel base conventional tractor with chicken lights.
Driving flat footed= hammer down/wide open.
Cornbinder, Emeryville, White road commode, Barnyard Buick.=International road tractors.
Gotter in the big hole= high gear.
I know a butt load more that would mean nothing to non truckers.
Drove big trucks and a few large cars for over 40 years so I managed to pick up a few truckin terms.
Oh, and by the way. A "big truck" goes as fast as he can and
a "Large Car" goes as fast as he wants to.[:D]
My white truck when I get to Joplin sometime is getting a three stuck conversion done to the 13sp in it, no benefit whatsoever other than major cool factor and keeping 90% of the drivers on the road today from knowing how to shift it [:D]
Driven some R model Macks back in the 80s when I worked at a place called Auto Wholesalers in PA. These were cement trucks that we disconnected the mixer bodies then drove to the scrap yards to have the bodies lifted off and scrapped. The ride back to the shop with no body as a cab& chassis was not a pleasant one.
So yes, I know all about the flipped 9 with the Big Hole on the Dash, the 4sp Brownies and being able to shift gears for 30 minutes before ever hitting the speed limits [8D]
Fishkiller, I have musical tastes that far exceeds what many others have. Most folks stick to just a couple genres while I listen to damn near all of them except rap/hiphop. There are days that I have classical playing, yes classical! There are days I listen to 80s pop music like Cindi Lauper, country, hair bands and even now progressive rock. I listen to Swedish black metal and Norweigan death metal and damn near everything else.
But if you want a song, a song that if you just crank up and let yourself go for 3 minutes you will find yourself smashig the gas pedal through the floor. This song is not for older mellow folks, it is angry beyond angry. Even though it is angry there is somethin about it that just mentally elevates you and causes headbanging while chanting along with the chorus! Want the link?
*****WARNING***** THIS SONG IS NOT FOR SENSITIVE PEOPLE NOT IS IT FOR OLD PEOPLE!!!!! IT WILL CAUSE POSSIBLE HEART FAILURE OR A STROKE!!!!!!
Folks my age will find the younger generations staring at you while laughing at the middle aged dude jamming out to a song obviously meant for the Mosh Pit!!!

the worst shifting truck I ever drove was right out of high school I worked for local farmer , he had big old tri-axle chevy's with 5 and 4's in them , what a pain in the * , give me a 13 or 18 any day
and now these new Volvos the company is getting in have those I shift 12 speeds in them , put your foot on the brake , push the D on the dash and release the parking brake [V][xx(]
well I made 30 seconds on that link before it went bye bye

Those damn auto shift trucks and the so called driver market they target are going to be the end of trucking as we know it.
Driving music is always good!!

..That's what my older son drove for his CDL test. What's worse is all he pulled was a car trailer on a pintle hitch! That's not truck driving.

I hate them, it wouldn't be so bad if we actually had the better shifter but all these have is the push buttons R, N , D , and M on the dash under the radio , the best you can do is try to hit the M (manual ) and hold that gear if you need too ,other wise it does its own thing, which is a real pain in the * in stop and go traffic , should be real fun this winter on ice and snow , or better yet try to get out of a parking spot when it hasn't been plowed yet , no rocking these F---- ers [V]

Are these drag trucks using regular stock "Spicer" clutches or,do they use some kind of custom made clutches?
