The name Orvis is magical

For the last twenty-five years or so ,I have lived about fifteen miles from Orvis in Vermont..I have never stopped in so today I did. The fishing gear was wonderful, the gun room wasn't anything to write home about.

The rest of the place was full of over priced clothing, furniture and tourist gee gaws....maple syrup, jams and jellies and twelve dollar a lb chocolates.

Everything with an Orvis label was twice the price of the same stuff in other outdoor stores or catalogs, especially the shotguns.

It was interesting and I was tempted to buy one of them there three hundred dollar dog beds..

About forty years ago Orvis stuff was competitively priced, but then Orvis, LL Bean, Eddie Bauer & Abercrombie&Fitch started a price war to see who could get the highest price for anything- seems the latter two have tried to re-invent themselves to try and stay in business.

    I agree with Ray.
I've got a lot of Orvis fly fishing equipment, quality stuff.
They have just priced themselves out of the market.
We all joked that after A River Runs Through It came out, fly fishing stuff doubled in price, especially Orvis.
