Blood clot....

Hmm, been doing a little research and found some interesting numbers(at least to me). Want to take a little survey now.

First, how many here have had a blood clot before? Second, where was it and was there a decent amount of constant pain?

I didn't think you were that old of a guy.
Second, never had one that I know of. 27yo and in good shape with no known health problems.

I think I am "good" Andy, but the wife and I were doing a little research thinking I originally might have one. I am almost the same age as you and in decent shape, so that was going for me. I do have a leg/ankle that I broke, dislocated, and smashed when younger, so I don't have complete motion in everything and was told to watch out for blood clots by the doctor.

Just learned a lot of stuff I didn't know about them until I studied up on it. Kind of interesting and scary at the same time.

Ah. A smashed leg does change things. What happened to make you think you had a clot?

That does change things, a clot that moves can kill ya deader than a hammer. If you think you have/had one, get it checked out, I just had surgery in Nov, so I had to wear those clot stockings for a few days. Be careful and get it checked out.

It isn't out of the norm for me to get some aching or dull pains in my left leg from time-to-time. Has happened less and less lately, but drastic weather changes usually bring them on and they last a anywhere from an hour to maybe 2 days. I have had one recently that has been bugging me for about 6 days now, so it was starting to make my mind work....ya know how that can work at times....immediately thinking the worst.

Anyways, the pain is far from constant, no swelling, redness, loss of feeling, nausea, fever, etc. So I don't think it is infected or clotted, but with my past injuries and a little reading, could be some old(or new) ligament damge from my previous injuries. Most of my soreness or pain comes on the inside of the knee, ankle, and thigh. PCL injuries are pretty common with patients who have broke their tibia, so that could very well be the issue. I have zero pain sitting and typing this, only time I have some if with swift twist or cuts off my left leg, or if I am on it all day at work(like I just was). That was part of the reason I had originally thought infection or blood clot. I develop muscle fatigue I guess they call it.

Basically, the whole reason I brought up this topic was to address the pain issue. I was always under the assumption that a blood clot meant a lot of pain, but from what I read, there are a high number of people who develop fairly serious blood clots and have very little pain. I was just wondering how many people that was true for here?

Just kind of caught me by surprise.

Sig, I worked as a CSI Detective for 3 years previously, you would never believe the sudden deaths that come from blood clots, folks have no clue that they have them and they break loose. They can check extremites fairly easy with ultrasonic, its worth the peace of mind. and yes your injuries its common for the pain, i have had both ankles reconstructed and now the knee, so i feel the weather acoming long before they say on tv. Just take normal precautions, and tell your doc what you worry about. i had my desending aorta checked as my family has problems, painless with ultrasound, and thats alot of causes of ripped aortas. If you remember John Ritter from threes company thats what killed him, never knew he had a problem til it ripped.

An old coworker, and friend of mine passed away early Christmas morning this year.
He had long since moved away, and I lost contact with him.
He had some blood clot issues in a leg.
Seems a clot moved to his heart, and killed him.
48 years old, with young kids.
    So sad.
Don't know about his pain level, but just wanted to say, if you do have blood clot problems, PLEASE take care of them!!

I developed one in my thigh; red & warm to the touch, but no real pain. It was treated with Asprin & Hot Compresses until it disolved. The real concern was if it moved down past the knee.

Now my medical history is noted for a tendancy to develope a Thrombosis. When I had knee surgery, they put me on a Heprin shot twice a day to reduce clotting. Short needles, injected into the stomach area. The shots are given to you in the hospital & you give them to yourself for 30 days after discharge. After a while, it looks like you were wearing a belt that was 4" too small.

Three episodes, all different, the first was on a flight from N.Y. to L.A- Pain deep down in my thigh, felt like a broken bone after a week or so when the throbbing stops. That deep pain, really intense.
The next I was hunting and had driven up to around 6-7 thousand feet from the valley and decided I wanted to run up and down 60 degree slopes at a high altitude chasing Deer. Got dizzy, left arm turned blue, most of the pain was in the left shoulder joint.
The last time most of the left side of my face went numb (permanently) a fan shape from the corner of my left eye to most of the left side of my lips top and bottom. No pain to speak of.
Serious blood thinners for around half a year, lesser blood thinners for a couple of years after. I had to stop the blood thinners, side affects.
Each time the diagnosis was the same, some sort of circulation episode and back on the blood thinners. Almost has to be I'm throwing clots form somewhere. My be related to moderate chronic arthritis or even a leftover form Malaria who knows? Nobody seems to know for sure (or care much), they just treat the symptoms.
From a non expert, my best advice is to get enough exercise but not too much. Lack of motion and altitude seems to have triggered the first, too much exercise at a high altitude seems to have triggered the second. And the third was right after s serious adrenaline dump, I had so much adrenaline in my system I felt like I could fly, heart beating at a round 160. My guess is the high heart rate jarred something loose.

Two bouts of DVT... both in my left leg. First one got to the point it hurt to stand/walk on it... I did the first ten days of Heprin my self at home...and if you not careful your belly will look like a prize fighter used you as a punching bag... The heprin shots were damn near $100 a piece..
