What a great, and grim song by Eric Bogle. Good song for St. Patrick's day, Bogle is from Scotland but we Irish and Scottish are all Celts.

Forum member Mark Christian has visited this battle site at Gallipoli and posted a wonderful picture essay of the battle site.

Here is one of his pics. This is the most magnanimous and compassionate battle memorial I have ever seen, made by, as Eric Bogle said, "Johnny Turk."

the dardanels sites are all sacred in my country, and in new zealand.
eric bogle might not be australian or new zealander, but he sings that song very well.
on the 25th of next month it will be 100 years since the gallipoli landings.

There is a memorial to Kemal Ataturk in Canberra, Australia that they built in his memory after the Turks named the cove for the ANZAC forces who landed and fought there.

As beautiful as the words of Ataturk are, it remains to be seen if the path into the modern world he set Turkey on will prevail over the current forces that seem intent on taking the country backwards.

History has a strong pull for those who see only the glory and none of the pain.
